Standards Alignment
DL. Strand 4, Standard 3a: Define intellectual property as a creative work or idea for which an individual has ownership rights.
Focus: Appropriate online behavior with respect to other people and to the law.
Objective: Students will evaluate legal copyright ownership across varied digital media scenarios and apply the TASL framework for proper content attribution.
Lesson Flow:
Hook (1-3 min): Present the wildlife photographer/monkey selfie scenario: Can an animal legally hold copyright over a photograph?
Video Clip (2 min) - abc news explaining the "monkey selfie battle."
Core Activity (5-7 min): Facilitate the interactive 5-scenario copyright quiz evaluating Public Domain (Mona Lisa), short dance moves, recipe protection (Trade Secrets vs. Crumbl lawsuit), purely AI-generated media, and original student artwork.
Review other forms of Intellectual Propery (trade secrets, patents, and trademarks) and how to properly give credit for a copyrighted image or video using the TASL method.
