Sound Walls in Our K-2 Classrooms
Sound walls are used in K-2 to support students' understanding of the sound/symbol connections in the English language. Students who have classrooms with sound walls learn to organize what they are learning about how words are built in our language.
The left side displays the vowel sounds of our language and the right side displays the consonant sounds of our language.

Words are placed on the sound wall under the target sound. The grapheme (spelling) of the target sound is highlighted in the word. This solidifies the students' understanding of the sound/symbol connections of our language.
