Curriculum Overview
All seventh and eighth grade students in WRSD can take Spanish as a world language. If you attend Mountview, you have the choice to take French. If you attend Central Tree, you have the choice to take German. Both years in seventh and eighth grade equate to one year of high school study. With a successful achievement score on the eighth grade placement test, students may be eligible to begin Spanish 2, French 2, or German 2 at WRHS.
State Curriculum Vision
From the MA Frameworks
All Massachusetts students will acquire a high level of linguistic and cultural proficiency in at least one world language. Proficiency in one or more world languages will empower students to use languages other than English to tell their own stories, understand the stories of others, and engage with their communities.
WRSD Middle School Curriculum
Mission
Our mission is to encourage risk taking by helping students build their confidence to study an additional language. We will foster joy, play, and enthusiasm through interactive communication and classroom activities. We will inspire curiosity in themselves and the world to be globally minded citizens who can work in the global economy and participate in global communities. Students will demonstrate competence through fostering study skills and social emotional awareness through self-reflective practices.
Vision
We as a department want our students to develop competence, and confidence through their additional language skills. We want them to feel comfortable, make mistakes, build confidence, and learn about themselves and the world where the target languages of study are spoken. Students will feel safe to be global citizens to make a positive impact on the world and their communities to one day achieve the Seal of Biliteracy. We as a department want to feed the high school program to help students develop a deeper understanding of the basics to build a strong foundation for further study.
