The Science Department at Wachusett Regional High School aims for excellence in science education for all its graduates. We understand that science is a human pursuit aimed at developing a deeper and more reliable understanding of both humans and their environment. Scientific literacy is a crucial key to functioning effectively in a technology-driven society.
The learning goals of the Science Department are:
■ To provide a fundamental understanding of how nature works in both living (life science) and non-living (physical science) systems, and to demonstrate their interconnections.
■To teach students the procedures and techniques used in scientific methods (e.g., forming hypotheses, conducting experiments, collecting and analyzing data to draw logical conclusions, etc.).
■ To challenge and inspire students to develop, apply, and effectively communicate their skills in creative thinking, problem recognition, and problem-solving within both hypothetical and real-world scientific contexts.
■ To establish a strong foundation by helping our graduates gain confidence and succeed in their introductory college science courses and post-secondary plans.
Our department is committed to ensuring that all students have access to high-quality, rigorous learning experiences aligned to state standards. These standards provide the foundation for our curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices, guiding us in setting clear expectations for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. By working collaboratively and aligning our practices to these standards, we can support student growth, close opportunity gaps, and prepare all learners for future success.
