Spring 2024

Thomas Prince School, a K-8 STEAM school, has a butterfly garden that was created in memory of a wonderful TPS kindergarten teacher, Lisa Beaupre, who loved TPS students and butterflies. It is located in back of the baseball field, up on a hill where the trees are overgrown and it is hidden.
A group of community members located a new site for this garden that is sunny and had an outdated playground that needed to be removed. It is located where all can easily access it, watch it grow and admire the butterflies, bees and birds that will visit the native plants to be planted in the Spring of 2024.
On 2/24/2023, the Princeton DPW, after approval by the Selectboard, removed the playground equipment from the west side of the school. THANK YOU!
A multidisciplinary group is being established to develop a Pollinator Garden dedicated to Lisa with the goal of creating a beautiful hands-on educational setting to learn about native plants, pollinator-plant relationships, why they are important and how they can be protected. Teachers can meet their curriculum standards using the pollinator garden and students, teachers, parent, staffs, and the community can help create and maintain a healthy environment for plants and wildlife while enjoying and conserving native plants.
We thank Kevin Beaupre and Lisa’s family for their generous donation to the garden. We look forward to dedicating Lisa’s Pollinator Garden in the spring.
This effort is being supported by the Wachusett Garden Club and the 2024 Lorrie Otto Seeds for Education Grant from The Wild Ones for $500. Wild Ones is committed to protecting and restoring biodiversity. Their vision is to support native plants and natural landscapes in every community. For over 20 years, they have funded youth organizations to grow native plants and seeds through outdoor learning experiences. Thomas Prince School is one of 23 awardees out of over 150 applications and the only New England recipient to receive this grant.
TPS signs announcing the coming of the Pollinator Garden are located on the TPS building, to the right of the main entrance. In addition, two yard signs were placed. One is facing Rte. 62 by the TPS School Sign and the second is located on the site where the garden will be built.
The Wachusett Garden Club is working on this grant with TPS and the community. They have also been helping with school programs on the TPS Nature Trails, the Bangrazi Courtyard dedicated to birds and nature and Elsie Vaugh’s Outdoor Garden, dedicated to students learning about native and invasive plants.
