Participation

Written Work (Quizzes, assignments, etc)

Each day you will start with 10 points. The following are reasons why you might lose points during class:

  • Absences

    • When you are absent, you are not participating; therefore you will not earn any points on these days. You do have the opportunity to make up the points you have lost within 2 weeks of the absence. The following two options are ways to make up classes:

      • Article Review – directions are posted on the PE Make-Up tab on this website

      • Active Make Up – join another PE class during a study hall

  • Not being properly dressed

    • You must wear tennis shoes and socks, a t-shirt and shorts or athletic pants.

    • You may not wear tank tops of any kind or t-shirts with the sleeves cut off, jeans, sandals, boots, clothing with inappropriate wording or profanity, jewelry, or hats.

  • Tardiness

    • All students must be in the locker room hallway by the first bell. All tardies will be reported to the office and subject to the school’s policy.

  • Low level of participation (some days this is determined by your heart rate monitor)

  • Disruptive or disrespectful behavior

  • Not following directions

  • Profanity

  • Misuse of Equipment

Special Circumstances

  • Illness – If you are going to be unable to participate more than one day, you will need a note from your doctor or you will not be allowed to make up these classes.

  • Injuries – We will provide an alternate activity for you if you are given permission from your doctor or athletic trainer. If you are unable to participate in any physical activity, the classes will need to be made up. You may be provided with projects or offered the option of completing article reviews. Your specific situation will be taken into consideration.

  • Field Trips – If you notify your teacher ahead of time, you will not need to make these classes up.

  • Extra-Curricular Absences – You will need to make these classes up.

Fitness Testing

You will participate in fitness testing twice in the semester. If you are absent on these days, you will need to make up the tests you missed. You will not be allowed to do an article review to make up these classes. Discuss your specific situation with your teacher if you have concerns about completing these tests.

Locks and Lockers

You will need to supply your own lock for your gym locker. If you need a lock you may purchase one from your teacher. You may give your combination and locker number to your teacher if you feel you might forget it. Please do your best to keep the lockers and locker rooms clean. Lastly, LOCK YOUR LOCKERS DURING AND AFTER CLASS! Unfortunately things do get stolen if lockers are left open so do not forget to lock up!

Changing and Showering

You are not required to shower but you are required to change for each class. You will usually have about 8 minutes to change before the end of the class period. If you are consistently late coming into the gym, the time to change at the end of class will decrease. On a day with a more elevated level of fitness, extra time may be given to change and shower.

Health Concerns

If you have a health concern that may inhibit your participation, please let your teacher know. Some examples might include if you have asthma, diabetes, injuries, etc. The goal for this class is for you to be able to participate safely and comfortably. Adaptations can be made when needed. Even if you are able to participate, please inform your teacher if you have an injury or are not feeling well.

If you have any questions after reading this syllabus or throughout the course of the year, please don’t hesitate to bring them to our attention. We are looking forward to a great year!
