 This Month!

Math -  This month we will be focusing on our geometry and patterning skills.  We are working really hard at telling the time, especially on an analog clock. We will continue to consolidate our multiplication facts up to 12 x 12.  We are continuing to follow the JUMP math program.  We are working together to learn how to organize our notebooks when working with math questions.  The students are really enjoying some of the math games that help us practice our skills. There will continue to be a focus on learning how to approach problem-solving questions.  We will be looking at a variety of strategies that can be used to approach problem questions. Students will be using miras and geoboards to explore symmetry and congruency concepts.  We will be working with grid coordinates and calculating elapsed time.

Science - Grade 5's - We will be reviewing our unit on changes of matter.  Students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the properties of matter, changes of state, and physical and chemical changes

Science - Grade 6's - We will be reviewing their Space unit.  They should be able to share their understanding of the solar system, the phenomena that result from the movement of different bodies within it, the technologies used in space exploration, and the impact of space exploration on humans, society, and the environment.  We have completed a lot of research and performed some experiments to learn about the exploration of space.

Language Arts - We will be completing our Snowglobe Story assignments.  The students will be participating in the guided reading of The Martian. We will be focusing on identifying the main idea of a paragraph and being able to infer information from what we have read.  Students will continue to practice their cursive handwriting skills and will learn how to type efficiently.  The students have been introduced to the 'Oreo cookie' paragraph structure, using point-proof comment organization.  They will have the opportunity to practice their paragraph writing with their homework assignments throughout the rest of this term.  Students continue to reflect on their readings in their reader's response journals.  We will be continuing to work on our Poetry slide deck.  Students will continue to demonstrate their understanding of digital responsibility and show some block coding skills.

Physical Education  - This month we will be focusing on cooperative games as the gym availability will be inconsistent.  We hope to enjoy a few good games of Triple Ball.

Health - We will be continuing to track our eating and physical activity habits.  We are going to be making  goals to improve our healthy habits.

Visual Arts - We will be working on our skills of building building three-dimensional art pieces with a variety of materials this month.

Social Studies - Grade 5 & 6 - We will be having some initial discussions on free trade and how elections can have a significant impact on trade relations.  We will continue to look at the comparison between First Nations communities and the European explorers and settlers.
