Is Co-op For You?
Here are a list of things to consider PRIOR to selecting co-op on your timetable:
If you are looking at doing a co-op placement in a skilled trade that requires you to travel to various job sites (plumbing, electrical, construction, HVAC, landscaping, etc), you should be committing to a 4 credit co-op. Employers often will not accept 2 credit (half-day) students.
If you are looking at doing a co-op placement in a skilled trade, these placements are limited within walking distance of EDSS, therefore you should have your own transportation available.
For most placements, you will be working during regular school hours but some employers may require alternate hours. This should be taken into consideration when considering extra curricular activities, part-time jobs, or other commitments .
Placements at your number one choice are not guaranteed. There are many students with similar interests and placements will be confirmed after the needs of all students in all classes are considered.
Goals Of Co-op
Allow students to:
apply in school learning to the world of work and explore potential career choices
“test drive” a career
develop a reflective habit of mind to derive meaning from their experiences
learn the skills, knowledge and habits of mind required to become competent and confident education and career/life planners.
What Do You Get From This Experience?
Work experience
Career investigation
Employability skills
Making connections with employers and employees in the workplace
Link between the theory that is taught at school and what occurs in the workplace
FUN!
Pre-Placement and Integration Days
