FSF1DI: Core French (Academic)
In the Grade 9 Academic Course, we use the communicative and action-oriented approaches. Students are encouraged to listen, speak, read and write in French. Oral communication is a focus, as reference is made to the principles of the CEFR. The language is targeted to young teenagers and their need for social interaction. Texts inspire authentic conversations and encourage real-world connections. Students learn through the following theme-based units: a new city, travel, social media and creativity and their own uniqueness. The use of correct grammar and appropriate language conventions in both spoken and written French will be emphasized throughout the course.

FSF2DI: Core French
This course emphasizes the continued development and refinement of students’ comprehension and production of oral and written communication. Students will build on and apply their knowledge of French while exploring a variety of themes, such as careers, humour, historical events, and a contemporary novel study. Thematic readings, which include a selection of short stories, articles and authentic material, serve as a basis for the grammar in speaking and written activities. In class there are opportunities to play French games and use French in fun and authentic ways.
Students will explore Francophone communities worldwide through audio and videos to further develop their communication skills in order to prepare them for a future in French! The grade 10 course also provides activities that help prepare students for the DELF if they choose to pursue this in the future in Grade 12.

FSF3UI: Core French
This course draws on a variety of themes to promote extensive development of reading and listening skills and to reinforce spoken and written communication skills. Students will produce and participate in various speaking opportunities. A highlight is the weekly student-led “Goûter” conversation which encourages spontaneous and authentic communication in French while applying critical thinking skills. Students will create a variety of written assignments for a range of audiences in order to express and organize their opinions in French. Students are supported to use correct grammar and appropriate language conventions in both spoken and written French will be emphasized throughout the course.
We will celebrate the Francophone speaking world through units like travel, francophone cultural celebrations and history, human rights issues, and the novel Le Petit Prince. These units allow for student’s to hear authentic audio and videos and to read different texts by francophone speaking communications in North America, Europe and Africa through experiential learning. The grade 11 course also provides activities that help prepare students for the DELF if they choose to pursue this in the future in Grade 12. It is a full and exciting course!

FSF4UI: Core French
This course draws on a variety of themes to promote extensive development of French-language skills. Students will consolidate their speaking skills as they discuss literature, culture, and current issues using a variety of texts, magazines, articles, podcasts, videos, and media. Students further develop their ability to share their opinions on different subjects and use more precise language conventions to help make convincing arguments. A highlight is the weekly student-led “Goûter” conversation which encourages spontaneous and authentic communication in French while applying critical thinking skills. In class we read a variety of texts to reinforce the use of correct grammar and appropriate language conventions in both spoken and written French. We explore the themes of memories and childhood experiences, social justice issues and current events, different artists from a variety of francophone backgrounds and a novel study. The students study a contemporary novel by Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt, which allows them to discuss the themes of childhood, illness, beliefs, love, and friendship. The grade 12 course also provides activities that help prepare students for the DELF French language exam offered by the WRDSB if they so choose. Students can also participate in “DELF Club” offered at lunch to further prepare for the DELF.
