The Visual and Performing Arts Department offerings are designed to provide an outstanding academic and cultural enrichment curriculum for all students and a more intense course of study for the student considering the arts as a career. In meeting the graduation requirement of 5 credits in the performing or fine arts, students will acquire greater knowledge of our cultural heritage and nurture creative skills and talents.
Our program will provide students at Wilmington High School with opportunities to effectively convey ideas and views using their choice of various tools, materials, and media in the areas of fine arts or performing arts. We will encourage an appreciation of the various forms of artistic expression. The Wilmington High School graduate will develop a personal portfolio demonstrating the skills and understanding needed for study in the arts at the college level and career readiness.
The Wilmington Middle School visual arts curriculum provides a strong, sequential foundation in visual arts, progressing from foundational skills to advanced concepts like observational drawing to creative thinking and 3D concepts. The progression from structured learning in 6th grade, to higher-order creative processes in 8th grade is well-suited for middle school students, supporting their cognitive and personal development.
6th Grade - Exploration of the Elements of Design
7th Grade - Portraiture, perspective, and figure drawings
8th Grade - Learn strategies to enhance creative thinking skills.
At the elementary level, students build foundational art skills that prepare them for upper grades. With every project, students develop their craftsmanship and creativity. Students gain an understanding of the elements and principles of art, and how to incorporate those in their unique works. Students also learn visual art vocabulary so that they can clearly articulate their personal voice and meaning expressed in their artwork.
The visual arts are a unique language through which individuals communicate their ideas, feelings and cultures. Multi-sensory experiences, such as the arts, are the means by which humans understand and express their world. Through art, students develop skills in a wide variety of materials, tools and techniques that allow for creative, meaningful and personal expression.
