A1: Overview of Social-Emotional Learning (Pre-K-12)

This session will introduce social-emotional learning, what it looks like at each level, and the importance of integrating it into daily classroom activities. Additionally, ideas will be provided to incorporate some helpful SEL tools at home.

A2: Digital Safety in the Age of AI & Social Media (Pre-K-12)

It is no secret that today's youth are using social media at high rates, but how is generative AI affecting today's students? While AI platforms (such as ChatGPT) are raising concerns for academics, AI platforms are embedded into popular social media platforms that are crossing into your student(s) social media accounts. Come to this session to learn about how AI and social media are now becoming intertwined. Leave this session with actionable items to keep your student(s) safer in today's digital world.

A3: Special Education Roundtable (Pre-K-12)

This session will be facilitated by our District Special Education Coordinator and a Special Education Team Chair, who will facilitate the discussion, provide helpful information, and answer questions.

A4: Shifts in Literacy Instruction- What Parents/Guardians Need to Know (Pre-K-5)

There has been quite a buzz on social media over the past few years about literacy instruction. Come learn what it is all about and what Wilmington is doing to ensure we are providing evidence-based instruction and materials. 

A5: Understanding Elementary Math and Math Workshop (K-5)

This session will be provided by our Elementary STEM Coordinator, who will provide a brief overview of our K-5 Math program and the shift teachers made this year to teach it within a guided workshop model. 

A6: Introduction to Kindergarten (Pre-K -K)

Is your child entering the Wilmington public schools as a kindergartener in the fall? Learn about screening and what to expect as your child transitions to Kindergarten.

A7: Executive Functioning Toolkit (Pre-K-5)

We use the term 'executive functioning' to describe a set of skills to help us plan, organize, display self-control, meet goals, and follow directions (among other tasks).  The development of these skills takes time and support.  This workshop will break down executive functioning skills, how we can support our children, and some tips to enhance the development of these skills.  We will have some handouts and 'make and take' activities to go along with the presentation.

A8: Special Education at the Secondary Level and Beyond: Transition Planning (6-12)

Secondary Transition is a time that begins when students turn 14 (or earlier, if the IEP team agrees). Transition services are based on the individual student's needs, taking into account his/her strengths, preferences, and interests. In this PGU seminar, we hope to help families facilitate the student's movement from school to post-school activities.  These services help young adults live, work, participate in the community, and go on to further education or training as independently as possible.

A9: Middle School Academic & Enrichment Opportunities (4-8)

This session will provide an overview of the program of studies at WMS, providing information about different course offerings. It will also highlight opportunities for enrichment, including athletics, performing arts, and clubs. There will be an opportunity for Q&A at the end of the presentation.

A10: High School Academic and Enrichment Opportunities (6-12)

This session will provide an overview of the program of studies at WHS, providing information about different course offerings and fields of study. It will also highlight opportunities for enrichment, including athletics, performing arts, and clubs. There will be an opportunity for Q&A at the end of the presentation.

A11: Preparing for College (6-12)

Are you planning to send a child to college in the next five years? Do you have questions about what to expect? A lot has changed since you or your friends went to college! At this session, you’ll receive a broad overview of the college application process, including how students should prepare and what colleges will be looking for. We’ll review national trends in education, and you’ll receive a brief overview of changes that will be coming soon (e.g., SAT, FAFSA), along with a survey of the current college landscape.

B2: Navigating WPS from the Parent Perspective: Engaging in your Student's Wilmington Public School Journey  (Pre-K-12)

Join members of the Parent and Guardian Advocates for Wilmington Schools (PAWS) group to learn about the variety of ways to get involved and partner with the schools to engage in your child’s education throughout their time at WPS. 

B3: Supporting English Learners in the Wilmington Public Schools (Pre-K-12)

This session will be presented by our ESL Curriculum Team Leader. She will provide parents/guardians of students learning English with information about the curriculum and resources available to support their child. 

B4: Mind Full or Mindful? A Mindfulness Session about Being in the Moment (Pre-K-12)

This session will focus on providing families with anxiety strategies and mindfulness techniques to support their child(ren) at home. Student anxiety is on the rise, and we want to provide you with some tools and strategies that can help support you as you help your child navigate the academic, social, and emotional challenges they face. 

B5: Introduction to Our New Reading Program in Grades K-5 (Pre-K-5)

WPS will be implementing a new literacy program called ”Into Reading” in grades K-5 in the fall! Come get a sneak preview of what your child will be learning! 

B6: Strategies to Deescalate Challenging Behavior (Pre-K-5)

Deescalation is the process of preventing a challenging situation from getting worse. In this session, we will discuss alternatives to reactive strategies and practice methods that will promote a safe home environment. We will discuss how to develop clear behavior expectations, consistent routines, reward systems, and ways to redirect challenging behavior. 

B7: Encouraging the Love of Language and Writing (K-5)

Does your child shy away from writing? In this session, we will first look at how Oral (spoken) Language is connected to Written Language. We'll look at how adults at home can support Oral (spoken)Language leading to Written Language and how we can make it fun!  Communicating with oral and written language is an important life skill.  It can also be a fun, creative outlet, a way to relax, a way to organize thoughts and express ourselves. Let's Make it fun!.
