As EES' flag handlers, 5th grade students learn about the Flag Code from WPSD's SEL & Art teacher, Tawney Crowley, the first week of school. Ms. Crowley has a unique background experience of having grown up on military bases, where she learned firsthand the responsibilities and history of handling our nation's flag.
5th graders are also the designated stewards of the EES garden. We have the joy of sharing each annual harvest with students (including many siblings and cousins!) from grades preK-4 prior to our Open House, where many classes then showcase their harvests in homemade cuisine for attendees of Open House.
EES is very fortunate to engage actively with the local USFS district's Educational Outreach and Engagement crew. Our most frequent visitor to the school, "Miss Claire," leads students almost every week of the year through a wide range of hands-on activities that are directly tied to our standards.
About me
I have felt a calling to teach for a long time. After over a decade of work in behavioral health and experiential education, I gained the formal training needed to enter classroom teaching. I have always loved tutoring and working with diverse learning groups to help them solve complex problems and further their education - mostly in experiential settings. While serving 9 years as a field guide, instructor, and administrator at Alaska Crossings, a wilderness-based behavioral health non-profit, I made the decision to serve my local community by pursuing a new career in elementary education. I am passionate about Place-Based Education, striving to help students build deeper connections with the world in their backyard. You may see me around town with my two little boys in tow, out on the water, up on a mountain chasing deer, pulling weeds in my garden, or planning an ethnic dinner with friends.
