The logo on the front of the coin is the Modern WATL Flag Logo. You can see the World in the background, colored red and blue (bullseye and killshot colors), with a hand holding the Butcher Axe. The 5 stars represent the 5 elements that make up the world - Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.
On the back of the coin is the QR code for this website. The hat in the middle is a nod to Joey the Hat - Joe Nessler, who was the first to bring the coin concept into Axe Throwing.
In 2021, a long time thrower by the name of Joe Nessler (Joey the Hat) introduced the concept of the "Challenge Coin" to Axe Throwing. Borrowing from the challenge coin roots in the military, in 2021 Joe introduced the first coins into Axe Throwing, and in 2022 he added the Champion Coin, and the WATL 64 and 32 coins (for perfect games).
The origins of challenge coins can be traced back to ancient times, with accounts suggesting that they were used by the Roman Empire. During the Roman era, soldiers were often rewarded for their exceptional service with specially minted coins. These coins not only held monetary value but also served as a symbol of distinction and pride.
The modern concept of challenge coins, as we know them today, can be attributed to World War I. The tradition of challenge coins began to spread among military units. The coins became a way to boost morale, foster camaraderie, and commemorate shared experiences. Challenge coins became a part of a friendly game or "challenge" in which a member would initiate a coin check. If unable to produce their coin, the individual would be responsible for buying a round of drinks for the group.
Over the years, challenge coins have evolved into highly personalized and cherished items within the military community. They continue to embody the pride, honor, and unity of those who serve, representing a rich tradition that spans generations of military personnel.
The coin you have received builds on Joe's efforts, and with his blessing. The purpose of the coin you have received is to commemorate your first tournament, but more importantly to allow you to pass that commemoration on to another thrower, at your next tournament. With this coin comes a responsibility to the sport and to each other, and you can read more about that on the next page.
This coin commemorates your first WATL tournament. The individual that gave you this coin has identified you as a first-time attendee, and by giving you this coin, is looking to help you out.
This coin does not count toward any challenges and is not a challenge coin in and of itself.
By accepting this coin, you are committing to passing it on to another tournament rookie at your next tournament and helping them navigate their first tournament
If you would like to purchase additional coins to pass out at future tournaments, or to have one to keep for yourself, you can do so in the WATL Store here.
