Culinary Arts

The Culinary program located at South High School is designed to educate and prepare students to become entry -level workers in the foodservice industry. Students will learn the necessary skills to prepare food for restaurant, private, or corporate settings. Students will also gain experience with customer service through the daily operations of the Colonel’s Café – a lunch service operation open to teachers and staff of South High. Throughout the program, students are encouraged to think for themselves and to always put their customers first.

Communication skills, Mathematics, Business writing, Reading, and Computer skills are reinforced on a weekly basis so students are prepared to be the best employee they can be. Further, instruction on employability and management/entrepreneurship provide students with a solid understanding of the world of work as well as what is required to open and operate one’s own business.

Diesel Technology

The Diesel Technology program provides students with the basic skills and knowledge needed to become a successful entry -level diesel technician. The program combines academic instruction with live “hands on” work experience to prepare the student for entry -level automotive technician positions.

Early Childhood Education

The Early Childhood Education program at South High focuses on the physical, intellectual, social, and emotional development of the child from birth to age five. Students examine the work of early theorists in the field and how the theorists’ work relates to teaching and learning of young children. Students will also gain knowledge of the responsibilities teachers have associated with Early Childhood programs. Students become familiar with state and federal agencies such as the Department of Children and Families, child abuse and reporting, and community resources available for children.
