The First Year Seminar (FYS) Program is looking for motivated WSU students who are interested in supporting first-year students in their first college semester. This Peer Mentoring Program will educate and train you in leadership and mentorship skills that you will use with students. As a peer mentor, you will guide first-year students in their academic, social and personal transition to college.
Space is limited for peer mentorship opportunities. A completed application is required (see link below). All academic majors are welcomed and encouraged to apply!

Summer II (July 10 - August 25) Session
Enrollment in Peer Mentoring (PS 295). This is a FREE online (synchronous) academic course for 3 credits.
This course will teach you theories of student development and leadership. Topics include understanding academic success, motivation and peer interactions.
Online assignments and one synchronous meeting each week.
Instructor: Dr. Colleen Sullivan, Associate Professor of Psychology
Passing Grade in the Peer Mentoring course is required to continue in the Peer Mentor Program. To be considered, applicants must commit to the summer session course. It is important to understand that this course will prepare you for your peer mentoring role in the Fall 2023. Engagement, participation, creativity and reflection is expected.
Fall 2023 Semester
Each peer mentor will be assigned to one First Year Seminar (FYS).
Peer mentor responsibilities will include: working directly with the FYS instructor, attending an FYS course, assisting with course discussions/activities, holding Peer Mentor hours and meeting weekly with FYS Director (Dr. Sullivan) and all peer mentors.
Peer mentors will work closely with first-year students.
Hourly wage is provided for hours worked each week.
As a peer mentor at WSU, the FYS instructor and the complete class of 20 first-year students will be looking to you for support and lead in your mentoring role.
Special Note about FYS: All WSU first-year students are required to take a FYS course during the first semester. This course is designed to support their transition to college with WSU-specific resources, general transition topics, and a unique academic focus created by their instructor. BUT, we are missing the current student view in the classroom!
The deadline to apply for the program is March 17, 2023.
Criteria to Apply:
GPA minimum of 3.0
30 credits earned at the end of Spring 2023
Willingness and ability to model appropriate behavior, goal setting and mentoring for new students.
