Chamber Choir is the top choir at Woodstown High School. Singers in the group serve as musical ambassadors in the community.
Chamber Choir sings exclusively a cappella (unaccompanied) music.
Rehearsals are Monday evenings from 7:00 until 9:00 pm.
Additional sectional rehearsals and choir retreats (extended rehearsals) are also scheduled and are posted on the choir calendar.
How do I audition?
Prepare the audition as listed below. If you need help getting ready, come to one of the announced interest meetings, work with a current Chamber Choir member or reach out directly to Mr. Gunther ... or do all three of these things! :-)
When you are ready to audition, contact Mr. Gunther to set up a time that works for you. You will audition for Mr. Gunther, but the audition will also be recorded and will be evaluated by other Woodstown music faculty.
For 2025-26, auditions must be completed by Friday, September 26.
Audition Details
Audition Information
There are three parts to the audition: scales, solo and quartet
Audition on the voice part that is most comfortable for you to show your best voice.
Tracks to prepare for this audition appear below. Take time to prepare and do your best. Talk to Mr. Gunther or current Chamber Choir members for help in preparing the audition.
Set up your audition time with Mr. Gunther. The audition must be completed by the end of September because Chamber Choir rehearsals start on the first Monday in October.
Auditions are recorded and judged by both Mr. Gunther and another music faculty member.
Part 1: Low and High Scales
Sing on the vowel ah as in father, taking a breath between the ascending and descending scales.
Pick two scales to sing that are four scales tones apart (alphabetically) so that we can hear your range.
For example:
If you sing soprano, you might choose to sing a low D scale and a G scale
If you sing bass, you might choose to sing a low G scale and a C scale
Scales are judged on tone and intonation.

Part 2: Solo – Amazing Grace
The solo portion is the third verse of Amazing Grace. (music appears below)
The solo is judged on tone, intonation and musicianship.

Part 3: Quartet – Break forth, O beauteous heavenly light
This is the hardest part of the audition, but it’s the most important. That’s because Chamber Choir members are expected to be able to keep their part accurately & confidently singing a cappella music.
The quartet is Break forth, O beauteous, heavenly light by Johann Sebastian Bach (music appears below). You only need to prepare the first half of this piece of music, but it's worth learning the whole thing since this is also the audition piece for the South Jersey Senior High Chorus.
Complete your audition with the “music-minus-one” track provided. For example, if you sing tenor, your audition track will have the soprano, alto and bass parts on the recording and not the tenor part.
The tonic pitch (the root key note) will be given on the track and you must find your starting pitch. This is not terribly difficult, but be sure to practice this way when you prepare.
The quartet is judged on tone, intonation and musicianship.
So ... what do these words mean?
Tone is the quality or specific sound of your voice.
Intonation is how well you sing in tune.
Musicianship includes concepts such as diction, breathing, pronunciation, vowel tone, expression and phrasing.
