Welcome to Ninth Grade!

We're glad you're here. This site will be a helpful parent resource for links and information related to ninth grade and transitioning to high school. See below for general information, athletic information, and how to get help with your questions.

We love 9th graders! Whether students are new to Woods or have been here for years, the high school faculty embraces each new group and is committed to supporting their learning experience in the Woods community.

We’re here! The 9th grade advisors, their other teachers, and the admin team are very involved in setting students up for success.

Advisors provide guidance and support for a group of about 15 students. They serve as a point person for communication with families and can help students navigate the transition to high school.

It’s a team effort! Over the course of high school, students assume ownership and responsibility for their learning. Teachers and families provide support along the way, allowing students to become increasingly independent.

The school day

Students begin each day in advisory, which provides a home base and main point of contact.

All classes meet every day, all year long. Periods are typically about 52 minutes each.

Lunch is a full period, so students have time to meet with teachers, do club activities, do some homework, or just relax with friends.

Students have access to lockers to store belongings.

There is usually homework for each class!

2021-22 Bell Schedule

Class schedule

All 9th grade students take a full load of required courses, including English I, Biology, World History, Health & PE, a math course, and either French or Spanish.

Daily schedules will be available on PowerSchool by late July.

See the 9th Grade Course Catalog for class descriptions.

Athletics

Eligible students may participate in varsity athletics!

Please review the Athletics handout or website for eligibility, academic requirements, information and registration. Athletic Director Dena Floyd provides regular updates through Woods News and High School Announcements.

Student-run Clubs

There will be a Club Fair and opportunities to learn about or start clubs at the beginning of the school year. We encourage all students to join at least one club. It’s a great way to have fun, make friends, gain experience, try new things, and be engaged with your school. Clubs typically meet during the lunch period.

Ongoing clubs include Envirothon, Model UN, Spanish Club, Yearbook, Science Olympiad, Running Club, and others.

School Supplies

A Chromebook or laptop is now an essential. Woods does not provide devices for every student, but can loan school Chromebooks if needed.

Math courses require a TI-84 Plus graphing calculator.

Health & PE requires gym clothes and running shoes.

Students will also need assorted notebooks, pens and other supplies, as well as access to wifi.

Classroom-specific supply needs will be shared by individual teachers.

If your family will need assistance with access to wifi or devices, please let Ms. Berg or Mr. Bryan know to follow up.

It's not middle school

High school students have more independence at school. They move around the building on their own, may eat lunch on the patio, and are responsible for keeping track of what they need to do.

Students are expected to check their Woods email daily and keep up with announcements and information.

Students must communicate with teachers directly, in person or online, when they have a question, problem, conflict, or need help.

Students are responsible for their academic progress and grades count towards GPA.

There is more work. Courses are for high school credit, and require commitment to staying on track with attendance, work completion, and homework.
