What is Online Safety?
Online safety is the safe use of information systems and electronic communications including the internet, mobile devices and game consoles. Learning about staying safe online is very important and at Woodlands Academy we teach our pupils to be aware of the benefits, risks and responsibilities of using technology.
Understanding online safety will help us:

- keep children and young people safe in the digital world we live in.
- keep up to date with effectively using new technologies in a positive, safe and responsible way.
- give children confidence online and be responsible users of the internet
- support pupils to develop safer online behaviours in school and at home.

- Staying connected: Keeping in touch with family and friends. Being connected is good for wellbeing.
- Being creative: with music, art, expressing themselves
- Teamwork: Collaborating online can encourage and develop teamwork
- Entertainment: being entertained by content online can help learning
- Learning and knowledge : A vast amount of information is available and children can learn in fun ways to help them be engaged with learning
- Research: Children can develop their research and digital skills
- Widely available: Children can access the internet in a range of places
- Helps the planet: By sharing content online, there is less need to print paper copies, meaning less paper use, helping our environment
- Fast form of communication: We can communicate much more efficiently

- sleep cycles can be disrupted by blue light from device screens
- central nervous system is activated more by on screen entertainment
- children can be vulnerable to marketing and persuasive tactics used in gaming.
If you are concerned about your child's online activity you can speak to a member of the Safeguarding Team in school.
