Woodland CUSD 5 follows the Common Core State Standards for Illinois. A link is provided for you to find more information about the CCSS in 4th Grade.
ELA stands for English Language Arts. This is an umbrella in the education world to cover everything that involves words: spelling, writing, reading. In our classroom we break ELA into Reading and Language Arts. Wonders is the reading program used by K-5.
In the area of Reading, my goal is for students to independently select & read book “just right” for them. I want them to learn about a variety of genres and enjoy reading. Students will learn a variety of strategies for becoming good readers. They will also learn to interpret & evaluate texts. Students should read regularly at home. Practice makes perfect.
Language arts in my classroom includes grammar, writing, and spelling. These skills are often imbedded into the Reading lessons as well as throughout the day.
Multiplication fact fluency is critical! We will start the year on basic facts and then it’s up to you. Pull out the flashcards or download an app to practice mastery. Mastery means fluent like when they read smoothly (not sounding out words). So 2-3 seconds from seeing the problem, they should have an answer to be considered automatic. Addition, subtraction and division facts are also helpful to have mastered. If your child has not mastered "their facts" please practice at home. Contact me if you need more direction.
Math units in fourth grade include multi-digit multiplication and division, fractions, & geometry.
Into Math is our math curriculum.
Fourth grade is usually the first year at Woodland that students are graded for the report card in Science/ S.S. In Science we focus on problem solving and engineering in as many of the sciences as possible. In S.S. focus is given to regions, US history.
Savvas is our curriculum for both these content areas. Students will rotate between SS or Science units throughout the year.
