Your weekly round up of events
As part of our World Book Day celebrations, we will be holding a school book swap event on March 5th. Children are invited to bring in a book from home that they no longer read and would like to swap for another book.
Books should be in good condition and suitable for your child’s age group. During the event, children will be able to choose a different book to take home — if they bring more than one book, they may swap for the same number of books.
If your child would prefer not to swap a book, they are still very welcome to bring in a favourite book to share with their class as part of our reading celebrations.
Mrs O'Leary
Over the half term we had some amazing news that one of our year 6 students is a record breaker. Krutarth along with 1,500 children world wide, recited 315 Sanskrit scriptures. Krutarth said he loves learning languages and decided to try and learn the scriptures in 3 months. Krutarth is now learning all about the meaning of the Hindu scriptures. Wood End Primary School and Krutarth parents are of course very proud of his hard work and dedication. Well done Krutarth and yes you are officially amazing!.
Cycling and scooting build confidence and fitness, but safety must come first. A helmet and high-visibility clothing protect children from serious injury. Please remind them to walk bikes and scooters on school grounds and check brakes regularly.

Bikeability Heads-up – How about helmets?
We recommend you wear a helmet to take part in our cycle training. Getting into good habits like this is the best start for your cycling adventures. When you wear a helmet, remember no one size fits all. Your helmet should sit on top of your head, not too tight or too loose, with the peak sitting about two fingers width above your eyebrows. The side adjusters should sit below your ears and form a nice V on the side of your head. The chin strap should allow for two fingers to fit between it and your chin.
Young children experience big emotions, but they are still learning how to understand and manage them. In EYFS, we help children name their feelings and practise simple strategies to cope.
At home, a few small approaches can make a big difference:
Name the feeling – “I can see you’re feeling cross/sad/frustrated.”
Naming emotions helps children make sense of them.
Stay calm and steady – Children borrow our calm. Speaking slowly and quietly helps them regulate.
Keep language simple – When children are upset, they can’t process lots of words. Short, reassuring phrases work best.
Offer limited choices – “Would you like a cuddle or some quiet time?”
This gives children a sense of control.
Reflect afterwards – Once calm, talk briefly about what happened and what might help next time.
Here are some quick strategies that you can encourage your child to use when they experience those big feelings:
1. Flower & Candle Breathing
Smell the flower (deep breath in)… blow out the candle (slow breath out). Repeat three times.
2. Turtle Tuck
Pretend to be a turtle going into its shell — curl up small, take a breath, then slowly stretch back out.
3. Calm Corner
Create a small cosy space at home with a cushion, soft toy, or favourite book. This isn’t a punishment space — it’s a safe space to reset.
4. Squeeze & Release
Clench fists tight for five seconds… then release. Repeat with shoulders or toes. This helps release physical tension.
It’s important to remember that big feelings are not “bad” behaviour — they are part of development. Learning to manage emotions takes time and repetition. With patient support and consistent responses, children gradually build the skills they need to feel secure, confident, and ready to learn.

Mr Best who is passionate about skipping invited the famous Skipping Ninja to come to school today. Very excited children had an assembly first thing in the morning and then class skipping workshops to discover how to unleash their own skipping ninja inside. The children absolutely loved the high energy ultraviolet skipping demonstration and light show. The skipping ninja holds various world records for skipping and was encouraging children to take part and demonstrating how good skipping was for physical health and mental health. They learned all the different techniques and different tricks they could do with just a skipping rope. Avira in Elm Class was named our first skipping ninja for being super happy and enthusiastic!. Children will carry on skipping during playtimes and learning new skipping games with our playleaders.

At Wood End Primary School we love to celebrate birthdays and we do this by wishing happy birthday and singing to children in class. Some families like to bring something to share with other children in class. As we have children with allergies in school we ask parents or carers to hand out gifts at the end of the school day by the class door. 🎂
Wood End Primary school support children in years 5 or year 6 who are aged 10 and over to fast during Ramadan. You must inform the school office if you want your child to fast during this time, if permission is not received the child will not be allowed to miss lunch. If children become distressed when they are fasting we will provide something to eat and drink. If Eid falls on a school day and you wish to take a days leave please complete a religious leave request form available from the office.
