Your weekly round up of events and what's coming up!
In our Key Stage assemblies and classroom discussions we discuss our our core values and this week are are concentrating on Achieve.
Being the best you is the path to success!
As part of encouraging independence in our Year 6 pupils, children are permitted to walk home alone only if we have received written consent from their parent or guardian. Please note that children may only walk home at 3:30pm — if your child is attending an after-school club, they must be collected by an adult, as the streets are often quieter and darker later in the day.
To help keep children safe, we encourage families to discuss the following safety tips together:
Plan ahead: Decide in advance whether your child is walking or taking public transport, and which route they will use.
Avoid danger spots: Stick to well-lit, busy areas. Avoid poorly lit alleyways or subways.
Cross safely: Use zebra or pedestrian crossings. Press the crossing button, wait for the green light, and make sure all vehicles have stopped before crossing.
Stay with others: There’s safety in numbers. If possible, walk with a friend or near groups of people.
Stay alert: Avoid distractions such as mobile phones or headphones. Being aware of your surroundings is key.
Trust your instincts: If something doesn’t feel right, move to a safer place. Cross the road, head to a busy area or shop, and ask for help.
Teaching your child how to navigate their journey home safely is an important step towards independence. Thank you for working with us to keep all of our pupils safe and supported.
We want all parents to feel confident that their child’s safety and wellbeing are our top priorities. Our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) is Mr Best, and he is supported by our Deputy DSLs Mr Stainbank, Mr Greeves and Mrs Donohue. Their role is to listen, take concerns seriously, and ensure children get the help they need.
You’ll often see the safeguarding team around school, greeting children and parents. Please don’t hesitate to stop us if you have a question or worry — no matter how small it may seem. Sometimes the smallest concern can make the biggest difference when it comes to keeping children safe.
If you’d rather talk in private, you can always ask for an appointment. We want you to feel reassured that there is a clear, confidential process in place to protect children.
We have had exciting new additions in the playground to enhance the children's Opal play experience. We have a new digging area, calm zone and a custom build new ship called the W.E. Splinter . The children are already having fun steering the ship to safe waters.
Developing Friendship Skills
School is the place where children learn to navigate the world of friendships. At this age, alliances often shift and change. Learning to make friends and get along with peers can cause some distress to most children.
How can parents help? - It is important to listen to your child’s experiences with peer challenges. Instead of telling them what to do, help them problem-solve, and also to clarify and understand their feelings. It is always best to stay away from taking sides with either child-offer empathy for all of your child’s feelings, and also reflect together on how their peer might be feeling. Coach your child to stand up for themselves using their words and help them learn to express their needs rather than attacking their friend. It is helpful to practice this together!
Sometimes we could all do with someone to talk to. .
If you would like to meet Helen Thorp for a confidential and non-judgemental chat about you, your
child, or any other worries, they are available on Wednesdays from 9-10am.

English Channel Swimmer
During Thursday’s assembly, the children were thrilled to welcome a very special guest — Leah Chowdhry. At just 26 years old, Leah became the first British Asian woman to swim the English Channel. Her incredible 30-mile journey, completed in just under 15 hours, was filled with challenges such as jellyfish, large ships, and seasickness — yet she persevered, raising over £175,000 for the British Asian Trust in the process.
Leah also generously donated copies of her new children’s book, which tells the story of her swim across the Channel. In her inspiring talk, she spoke about having dyslexia and shared an empowering message: with resilience and perseverance, you can achieve your dreams.

Adventure is at the heart of Scouting and Guiding. From camping trips to learning new skills, it’s all about fun, friendship, and developing confidence. Through exciting challenges and team activities, young people grow in resilience, learn life skills, and create memories that last a lifetime.
As part of National Recycle Week Wood End was selected as one of only 10 schools in the Borough to take part in this exciting opportunity. Lots of parents took advantage and donated unwanted electrical items to add to the project. All Items were collected and loaded onto the lorry on Friday morning. Thank you for your support and helping our planet.
Every half-day absence from school, by law, has to be classified as either authorised or unauthorised. This is why information about the cause of absence is always requested.
Authorised Absences
These are mornings or afternoons away from school for a valid reason such as illness, emergency medical or dental appointments (routine appointments should always be made out of school hours) and emergencies.
Unauthorised Absences
An absence is classified as Unauthorised if the reason was not recognised as acceptable. The Department for Education (DfE) and Local Education Authorities provide information for schools as to what is acceptable and what is not.
Examples of reasons that would not be accepted: Birthday, shopping trip, day trips, holidays.
All exceptional leave must be requested in advance, please allow at least a week, forms are available from the school office.
What to do if your child is absent from school
Contact the school office by 8.30am and leave a message providing a reason for the absence. The message must include the full name and class of the pupil, the reason for absence (if the reason is illness, parents should include details of the illness) and the expected date of return. If the pupil is to be off school for more than one day then the parent/carer must call and leave a message on each subsequent day. Tel: 0208 422 6175
Thank you all for your kind donations, we raised an amazing £275.50
