Your weekly round up of events
Keeping our children and families safe is our top priority, so we want to share a brief update regarding a recent report of a child being approached by a stranger in our local area. While the child is safe and the police are involved, this is a timely moment to review personal safety with your children. Please reinforce the importance of walking in groups, staying alert (phones away and headphones off), and keeping a safe distance from unfamiliar vehicles. You will notice our usual staff presence at our school gates during drop-off and pick-up. Thank you for your vigilance to help us to keep our community safe.
After four years of patience and progress, we are finally entering the home stretch! We are delighted to announce that our final building works will commence this Monday, 16th March, focusing on our Nursery outdoor space and the main playground.
These enhancements are designed to breathe new life into our grounds, creating vibrant, imaginative spaces where our children can truly thrive. By aligning these upgrades with the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme, we are ensuring that our pupils have the very best environment to develop their play, curiosity, and physical skills. We can’t wait to see these areas transformed into the exciting areas of discovery!
Your perspective is one of our most valuable tools for growth! We would like to invite all parents and carers to complete our Annual Governor Survey. This feedback is essential in helping our Governing Body monitor the school’s performance and ensure we are meeting the needs of our children. By sharing your thoughts, you provide the insights we need to plan effectively for future improvements and celebrate our current successes. Please take a few minutes to help us shape the best possible environment for your children—your voice truly makes a difference. Click HERE to complete the survey.
Our dedicated team of Eco Warriors has been a whirlwind of green activity this week, proving that small hands can make a massive impact on the health of our planet. The crew rolled up their sleeves and got stuck into the soil, carefully planting a series of indigenous hedges to create a living boundary around our burgeoning wildlife garden.
These native species aren't just for show; they provide essential corridors and nesting spots for local birds and insects. We’ve also expanded our canopy by planting young trees across the new grass areas bordering our field. These saplings are the first step in transforming our open spaces into a thriving nature area that will offer shade, clean air, and a rich habitat for years to come.
But their mission doesn't stop at the garden gate. Our Eco Warriors are also tackling chemical waste by launching a community-wide battery recycling drive. By asking parents and carers to donate old batteries rather than tossing them in the bin, we’re preventing toxic materials from leaching into the earth. It's a brilliant example of how local stewardship translates into global protection.
🌳As part of our new landscape we have added 8 new mature trees next to our new studio hall and along the edge of the sports field.
The new tree varieties include: Amelancher Lamarckll, Sorbus and Acers. 🌳
Together with Pod and Wastebuster we are collecting Batteries to recycle and turn into vouchers for books, so if you have any of the batteries below please bring them into the school office for recycling.
Wastebuster is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company and accredited NGO partner of the United Nations Environment Programme, dedicated to environmental education and social impact. Always keen to collaborate with organisations that share our commitment to protecting the planet and empowering the next generation.
We CAN accept the following:
AAA, AA, C, D, 9V and 6V Batteries, Mobile Phone Batteries, Laptop Batteries, Power Tool Batteries
All lithium (Li) and button batteries should have sticky or masking tape covering their connectors. Button batteries can be placed in a line between two sections of sticky tape.
Collections CANNOT accept:
Damaged or leaking batteries, Car Batteries, Batteries with connecting wires (unless taped to the side of the battery)
Fire safety is an important conversation for every family. Working smoke alarms save lives — it’s recommended that alarms are tested monthly and that batteries are replaced when needed. If possible, have at least one alarm on every level of your home.
It can also be helpful to talk through a simple family plan in case of a fire: Get out, stay out, call 999. Children should know not to hide and never to go back inside a building once they are out. Practising what to do calmly helps reduce panic if an emergency ever occurs.
Simple precautions such as keeping matches and lighters out of reach, not leaving cooking unattended, and blowing out candles fully can prevent accidents. Taking small steps at home helps keep everyone safe.

Learning to read is one of the most exciting parts of children’s early school experience. In EYFS, we begin by teaching phonics, which helps children understand that letters represent sounds and that these sounds can be blended together to read words.
Alongside phonics lessons, we place a huge emphasis on developing a love of reading. Listening to stories, talking about books, and exploring new vocabulary all help children become confident and enthusiastic readers.
There are many simple ways you can support reading at home:
Read together every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes.
Re-read favourite books – repetition helps children build confidence and understanding.
Talk about the story – ask questions like “What do you think will happen next?” or “Who was your favourite character?”
Practise letter sounds your child has learned at school during everyday moments (for example spotting sounds on signs or packaging).
Celebrate effort when your child attempts to sound out words, even if they don’t get it quite right.
Keep reading enjoyable – stories, picture books, comics and bedtime books all count.
Most importantly, sharing books together helps children see reading as something special and enjoyable. Those positive experiences build the foundation for strong reading skills in the years ahead.

Chestnut class assembly this week was all about volcanoes, children have been learning all about how they enrich the planet and how they work. Mrs Brooks would like to thank the many parents and children have been been busy building volcanoes at home. We have some very creative Wood End families.
Often, dinner can feel like such a chore, even a mission, that you just want to get through. However, studies show that having dinner together as a family is a top predictor for how well children will do in school and in adolescence. The ritual of sharing food with those we love offers children the security of belonging, being nurtured and a space to talk and share.
How can parents help?
Try to have at least a few nights a week when you can all eat together. Keep that space sacred, safe and positive and, most importantly, switch off the TV and all devices, including your own phones! It is helpful to keep dinner fun and playful and to engage everyone in preparing the meal and/or setting the table. Think of rituals you can put in place and try to make the discussions interesting for everyone. And the first secret is to keep the food healthy but simple: look after yourself and save your energy for connecting with your family.
Sometimes we could all do with someone to talk to. If you would like to meet Helen for a confidential and non-judgemental chat about you, your child, or any other worries, they are available on Wednesdays from 9-10am. You can call/text 07429654584 or email helen@schoolscounsellingpartnership.co.uk
