Bonfire Night and Diwali is always an exciting event for children, but how do you remember remember to stay safe through all the celebrations? Here’s some top tips to make sure it’s just the fireworks that go off with a bang.
As bonfire season gets underway and the fireworks display begins, it’s important to remember to stay safe on the night.
Fireworks Children should be kept well away from fireworks and enjoy them indoors or at a safe distance. Keep a torch, a bucket of water, eye protection, and gloves handy.
Firework Safety Tips:
Light the firework at arm’s length
Never return to a firework once it’s been lit
Only one person should be in charge of setting off fireworks
Make sure all flames are extinguished and throw discarded fireworks away at the end of the event
Children should wear ear defenders to protect their ears from loud noises
Read the instructions on each firework
Read the firework code to enjoy your firework celebrations safely
Sparklers
Sparklers are a staple at any bonfire night and provide sparkly memorable magic for both children and adults. But sparklers remain one of the most dangerous fireworks with their temperatures reaching 20 times hotter than boiling water!
The good news is, you can still enjoy sparklers safely, just remember, it isn’t recommended that they are used by children under 5 years old.
Sparkler Safety Tips:
Never hold more than one sparkler at a time
Always wear gloves when holding a sparkler
Babies and toddlers can wriggle and reach out unexpectedly so avoid holding them when holding a sparkler
Put the sparkler in a bucket of cold water once it’s finished
Always light one sparkler at a time
Bonfire Safety Tips:
Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby in case of emergencies
Never leave a bonfire unattended
Don’t throw any fireworks onto the fire
Tie back long hair and avoid wearing loose clothing
Spray the embers with water once the fire has died down to prevent it from reigniting
Keep pets indoors
STAY SAFE and HAVE FUN
As part of our Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) programme and our Play Policy playtimes and lunchtimes at Wood End typically take place outdoors in all weathers. Playing outside every day is a vital part of children’s wellbeing, development and enjoyment of school, so it is important that everyone is dressed appropriately.
To help us with this, please ensure your child has: Outdoor coat and wellies.
Each year group now has a clearly labelled bench in the playground for storing spare shoes and wellies. We will be showing the children where to find these. Please make sure all items are clearly named so they can be returned to their owners.
Indoor wet play will only be used in exceptionally wet weather. Staff will also be dressing for the weather, and we are talking with the children about why this matters. Thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
Ms Brooks launched the activity passport initiative last week in school. You can purchase an Activity Passport in the school shop on Arbor App.
Chloe has received her's this week and will be filling it over half term.
This is for the school community. If you need to take any of the food items please do, however only take a small amount. This will ensure more families benefit from the charity! We DO NOT want to see people using large bags or black bin bags to fill up with the food items, this only benefits a few!
Updated national guidance this year places a clear focus on how schools manage mobile phones, because phones give children access to the internet, messaging and cameras, often without any adult oversight.
Our approach is simple: school is a time for learning, friendships and play, and children are safest when they’re not distracted or exposed to online content during the day.
Pupils in Nursery to Year 5 should not bring phones to school. Year 6 pupils may bring a brick phone only if they walk to or from school without a parent or carer, and this must be requested in writing. Phones are handed in at the start of the day.
At home, it helps to keep phones out of bedrooms overnight and to agree clear expectations about how they’re used.
Working together makes the rules easier for everyone.
Kind Regards
Chris Best
For the first 2 weeks of this half term, our independence focus in Nursery and Reception is learning to put on our coats all by ourselves! In Reception, we are taking this one step further by encouraging children to fasten their own buttons and zips.
Being able to manage their own coats is an important life skill. It helps children develop confidence, independence, coordination and a real sense of achievement. These small steps make a big difference, particularly when getting ready for outdoor play and home time!
How are we helping in school?
We are teaching the children the butterfly method, a fun and simple way to put on their coats independently:
Lay the coat on the floor with the inside facing upwards and the hood or collar nearest your feet.
Put your arms into the sleeves.
Lift your arms up and over your head, just like butterfly wings!
Wiggle your coat into place – all done!
How can you help at home?
Give your child time to practise putting on their coat without rushing to help.
Encourage them to have a go first, even if they find it tricky.
Practise the butterfly method together and celebrate their efforts.
For Reception children, practise connecting the two parts of the zip before pulling it up. This is often the trickiest part!
Use lots of encouragement, such as "Have a go!", "You're nearly there!" and "Look what you did all by yourself!"
Remember, the goal isn't to get it right straight away – it's to build the confidence to keep trying. A little patience and practice each day can make a huge difference.
Thank you for supporting us in helping our children become confident, capable and independent learners!
