Our learning character this week was Oma the Owl, congratulations to our children who received their certificates today. Oma encourages children to take care and include one another.
On Thursday 10 children from Year 2 and Ms McFarlane attended a Dance and Gymnastics Festival at The Ellen Wilkinson Schools for Girls. Representing Wood End Primary School they performed a dance that they have been practicing in school based on the well known children's story 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' . The children enjoyed the experience from traveling there on the train to performing and receiving their certificates.
We share a heartfelt farewell to Ms Cantillan Serrano, who is moving on after more than 12 years of service. Ms Cantillan Serrano’s connection to our school runs deep; not only has she been a pillar of our staff, but she is also a proud parent who watched her own children grow up within these halls. Whether she was acting as a vital bridge for our families through her translation and communication support or lending a steady hand to our teaching staff.
Ms Cantillan Serrano’s impact on our children has been transformative. She navigated every special intervention with a smile, creating a nurturing and inclusive environment where every child felt safe to thrive. From support on school trips and events to her willingness to help any year group at a moment’s notice, she has been a true champion for our entire school community. We are grateful for the care, warmth, and dedication she has poured into our school. We will miss her and wish her nothing but the very best as she begins her next chapter!
Emotional literacy — recognising and naming feelings — helps children manage them. We use “Zones of Regulation” language in school; you can mirror this at home.
Ask, “Which zone are you in?” or “What could help you move back to green?” When children can talk about emotions, outbursts reduce and empathy grows.
Why We Don't Rush Writing
In EYFS, children don’t start with lots of pencil-and-paper activities — and that’s intentional! Before writing letters, children need to build the strength and coordination in their hands and fingers that make writing easier and more enjoyable.
Activities such as cutting, threading beads, playing with playdough, painting, or building with blocks all help develop these essential muscles. Even simple everyday tasks like stirring batter, picking up small objects, or using tongs at home are valuable for fine motor development.
Parents can support this at home in lots of fun ways:
Mark-making: Encourage your child to draw, paint, or use chalk outside.
Messy play: Playdough, sand, water, or even spreading butter on toast strengthens hands.
Everyday tasks: Let children help with pouring, spooning, or tidying small toys.
Creative tools: Tweezers, pegs, brushes, and scissors all help develop control and coordination.
And don’t worry — we’re not saying your child won’t ever hold a pencil! They absolutely have access to pens and pencils at school, but giving them time to develop hand strength and confidence first makes writing a lot more enjoyable.
The key is to keep activities playful and relaxed. When children feel confident and enjoy using their hands in lots of different ways, writing will follow naturally — without pressure or worksheets.

Sibling relationships are among the longest-lasting connections our children will have in their lives, yet they can also be some of the most challenging to navigate during childhood. Many parents find themselves refereeing constant squabbles, mediating toy disputes, or hearing cries of that's not fair! echo through the house. While sibling rivalry is a normal part of growing up, these early years are crucial for laying the foundation of lifelong friendship and mutual support between brothers and sisters.
The roots of sibling conflict often lie in competition for parental attention, differences in temperament and interests, or simply the stress of sharing space and resources. Children are still developing their emotional regulation skills and haven't yet learned the art of compromise. What might seem like endless bickering to us is actually their way of learning how to negotiate, assert boundaries, and understand different perspectives. However, without guidance, these conflicts can become entrenched patterns that strain family harmony and prevent siblings from enjoying the special bond they could share.
How Parents Can Help
Parents play a vital role in shaping positive sibling relationships. Start by avoiding comparisons between children, as this fuels resentment and competition. Instead, celebrate each child's unique qualities and ensure they each receive one-on-one time with you. When conflicts arise, resist the urge to immediately determine who's right or wrong. Rather, help children express their feelings and guide them toward finding solutions together, teaching valuable problem-solving skills they'll use throughout life. Create opportunities for siblings to cooperate rather than compete by encouraging team activities, shared projects, or games where they work together toward a common goal. Acknowledge and praise moments when you catch them being kind, helpful, or playing well together. Finally, model the respectful communication and conflict resolution you want to see in them, remembering that the way parents handle disagreements teaches children powerful lessons about relationships.
Sometimes we could all do with someone to talk to. If you would like to meet Helen Thorp for a confidential and non-judgemental chat about you, your child, or any other worries, they are available on Wednesdays from 9-10am. You can call/text 07429654584 or email helen@schoolscounsellingpartnership.co.uk
