Your weekly round up of events in school and what's coming up
Year 2 Sats in School
Year 2 SAT's Tests will start on Friday 19th May 2023 and continue into the following week. Please ensure that your child has a restful nights sleep and a good breakfast. If your child is not able to come to school due to illness please contact the school before 9am on 0208 422 6175.
Don't Panic: The tests will happen very low-key over the week and during normal lesson time. Some children will not even be aware that they are being tested. Results will be given in your child's report at the end of the year.
To celebrate the end of SAT's on Friday 26th May year 2 will be having a picnic in the afternoon after lunch to celebrate, children can bring in a few snacks to enjoy for themselves.
Mrs O'Leary - Year 1 Hazel Class
All of us at Wood End Primary would like to wish Mrs O'Leary all the best for a happy and restful maternity leave. Mrs O'Leary's last day is Friday 19th May before she takes time off to have her baby. For the remainder of the term Mr Greeves and Mrs Earle will take on her teaching responsibilities in Year 1 Hazel class.
Mrs O'Leary, take the time to enjoy every minute of your maternity leave with your new baby. We wish you all the best and look forward to seeing photos of your new baby.
Social Media
This week is mental health awareness week. We know there is a rising concern about the link between social media and children's mental health. There are very few parents who do not have questions or concerns about how to keep their children safe online and how to help them navigate the world of social media. If you want to find out more about this, please have a look at the following link. There is no better time than NOW to educate yourself about this and especially if your child has access (or their older brothers and sisters do) to social media. Please get in touch with the school if you have any concerns about your child and their experience of using social media. https://www.nspcc.org.uk/keeping-children-safe/online-safety/social-media/
Dogs in school
One of the ways Wood End Primary School helps the local community is allowing the police to train police dogs in our field on the weekends when the school is child free and police can train uninterrupted.
We do not allow dogs on site during the school week when children are present. This policy is designed for the safety of children, some children may have allergies and other children can be afraid of dogs or sometimes overly friendly with dogs, causing dogs to get stressed. Please note this does not apply to assistance dogs and those being used for educational purposes. Thank you for your support.
The Space
Things to know about saying ‘NO’ to your child
We all wish our children would just comply when we ask them to do something. However we all know that really isn’t always the case! Thankfully, it is possible to help children want to cooperate without resorting to yelling, threats or harshness.
How can parents help?
The most important thing to remember is that children only listen to us because of who we are to them. So be sure to keep strengthening your relationship: consciously connect with them before giving them a direction. You can also try to transform it into something fun and inviting! Kids will accept your limit when you first accept their feelings about your limits (sadness, anger, disappointment,…). Finally, children follow our requests when they feel they have some control in the situation: avoid power struggles by giving them a choice and some autonomy.
Sometimes we could all do with someone to talk to. If you would like to meet Helen for a confidential and non-judgemental chat about you, your child, or any other worries, she is available on Wednesdays and Thursdays 9-10am. You can call/text Helen on 07429 654584 or email her at helen@schoolscounsellingpartnership.co.uk
