To use drama to record key details of a story- Being investigative journalists for the day
Year 4 are studying The Iron Man by Ted Hughes and we are working on a newspaper report related to the book. Last week, we had the exciting opportunity to attend a press conference in the Studio Hall with some of the key witnesses who first saw the Iron Man and mysterious metal monster. At the press conference, Hogarth and Paul Wingrove and the farmer Bob Kennedy answered our questions and we recorded what they said for our newspaper reports. Perhaps one of the most memorable moments was when Bob Kennedy declared, "I will get my revenge!"
Ms Wright Year 4 Teacher.
In assembly this week children were reminded why we wear school uniform.
It helps you dress smartly for school and help you feel confident
You will all be equal in school
When worn properly you realise the importance of giving respect to others
You feel part of team Wood End Team.
Remember we have preloved items for sale outside the welfare room and we accept uniform items which are in good condition.
We teach that most people are kind, but children should never go anywhere or accept gifts from someone they don’t know well.
The rule is simple: Say No, Get Away, Tell Someone. Reassure your child that telling a trusted adult is always the right thing to do.
Small world play includes activities where children use figures, animals, vehicles, or characters to create their own stories and scenarios. While this type of play may look simple, it plays a powerful role in children’s learning and development.
Through small world play, children develop language and storytelling skills, practise new vocabulary, explore emotions, and make sense of the world around them. They often act out real-life experiences — such as family routines, journeys, or events they’ve seen — which helps them process and understand their own experiences. When children play with others, it also supports turn-taking, cooperation, and negotiation.
Parents can support small world play easily at home — it doesn’t need expensive toys or lots of space.
You might try:
Using toy animals, cars, trains, or dolls to make up simple stories together
Creating a scene with household items (boxes for buildings, blankets for landscapes, cushions for roads)
Using natural materials such as sticks, stones, leaves, or shells to create outdoor small world play
Encouraging your child to talk about what is happening: “Who is this character?” or “What might happen next?”
You don’t need to lead the play — following your child’s ideas and listening to their stories is incredibly valuable. Small world play helps children build imagination, confidence, and communication skills, all while having fun and feeling in control of their learning.

Children's Mental Health Week is next week. The theme this year is ‘This is My Place’ . This is based around belonging, how we can feel a sense of belonging and help others feel like they belong. I will be running assemblies on Wednesday 11 th February. We will explore this theme, including celebrating our differences, understanding that some people are similar to us and some are different, but we should all feel included. We will look at how we can include others so that we all feel safe and part of the school community. The children will also be doing an art based activity in class based on this theme.
Own clothes day Friday 13 th February.
There will be an own clothes day on Friday 13 th February. Children are invited to wear an outfit that makes the children feel most comfortable, confident, and like they truly belong, whether that’s cosy clothes, cultural dress, favourite colours, or something unique. Celebrate what makes you, you ! There is a suggested £1 donation to raise money for SCP at Wood End.
Sometimes we could all do with someone to talk to. If you would like to meet Helen Thorp for a confidential and non-judgemental chat about you, your child, or any other worries, they are available on Wednesdays from 9-10am. You can call/text 07429654584 or email helen@schoolscounsellingpartnership.co.uk
With the islamic festival Ramadan fast approaching we would like to make you aware that we have a school policy regarding fasting, which is available on our website to view, www.woodendprimaryschool.com. Wood End Primary school support children in years 5 or year 6 who are aged 10 and over to fast during Ramadan. You must inform the school office if you want your child to fast during this time, if permission is not received the child will not be allowed to miss lunch. If Eid falls on a school day and you wish to take a days leave please complete a religious leave request form.
Year 2 Elm class have been growing cress from seed and learning about the growing cycling. Even though we don't like the rain that much the plants definitely do. In just one week children have watched their crops grow ready for eating. They have been writing all about their findings.
Thank you to everyone that took part in the school council rainbow fundraising day. It was very colourful today in school
