Description: In this mobile workshop/presentation, learn how centering people in the development of the Buffalo Central Terminal has catapulted the resilience of this beloved place. Build an understanding of the Master Planning process and the community-driven vision for the future. Get an inside look at the proven strategies the Buffalo Central Terminal will use to bring the Terminal back to life. With a focus on a community-driven vision for the future of the vast building and grounds, the development of the Central Terminal WITH its neighbors will join broader strategic efforts to propel economic growth and wealth building in a community that has been left behind in the Buffalo resurgence.

Urban Agriculture

Date: Thursday, October 13th

Description: This mobile workshop will focus on urban agriculture in the City of Buffalo, as it relates to neighborhood revitalization and food access. Urban farmers and activists from the Massachusetts Avenue Project (MAP) and Groundwork Market Garden will lead the group on tours of their respective agricultural endeavors and will also speak to lessons learned regarding zoning policy, neighborhood conflicts, and other relevant municipal policy. Participants will spend 45 minutes at each farm and will have the opportunity to ask questions throughout each stop. Participants will learn how to support urban agriculture in their communities. Transportation from the conference venue to the farms and back will be provided.

Niagara Falls

Date: Thursday, October 13

Description: Session participants will travel by bus from the conference venue to Niagara Falls, NY for an exciting tour of past, present, and future planned revitalization initiatives. The tour will highlight new hotel development, renovation of the Seneca Niagara Casino, development of the Third Street Entertainment District, reconstruction of Old Falls Street, adaptive reuse of the Rainbow Mall into the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute, improvements to Niagara Falls State Park including construction of a new Welcome Center, removal of the Robert Moses Parkway and construction of the Gorgeview park and trail, construction of the Niagara Falls International Railway Station and Underground Railroad Heritage Center, the Bridge District Downtown Revitalization Initiative, and other main street revitalization efforts.

Chestnut Ridge Park

Date: Friday, October 14th

Time: 1:00pm – 4:00pm

Description: Registrants will use their own method of transportation to meet at the Chestnut Ridge Park Casino (6121 Chestnut Ridge Rd, Orchard Park, NY 14127) at 1:00pm for a free lunch provided by Parkitects (there is ample free parking). Then from 2:00-4:00pm, Parkitects will provide a CEU Session entitled “Design with Sensory Need in Mind.” Sensory related disabilities are the fastest growing disability category among children today. This mobile tour will include a presentation that explores several different childhood diagnoses that have sensory components. We will then define design strategies used to create play spaces so that these children and their families can successfully GET there, PLAY there and STAY there and have tons of fun. Following presentation participants will walk to the adjacent playground to explore and dialogue about these concepts in a real life onsite case study.
