REACH Homework Help

What is REACH Homework Help?

Every Monday and Wednesday at the Westminster Afterschool Program, our participants have the opportunity to work on their homework with their classmates, and have access to knowledgeable adults who can help. Even if teachers don't assign homework, all children are expected to read for 30 minutes, and they have the opportunity to do so during REACH time. After homework time, they engage in fun math, literacy and team-building activities.

My kid is in kindergarten, what will they do during this time?

Our kindergarten and first grade programs do not include homework time, as children in these grades usually do not have traditional homework. So, on Mondays and Wednesdays our little guys play active, engaging games that target math and literacy skills, and spend lots of time outside!

But I don't want my kid sitting around doing more academic work after school... shouldn't they be running around more?

Before we start homework time, the children get at least 30 minutes of active free play and a healthy snack. We recognize that education is about more than reading, writing and arithmetic, so our program addresses the social, physical, and emotional well-being of kids, too. We break up our activities so children are not sedentary for too long.

What if my child doesn't have homework?

When children do not have homework, we ask that they read a book for 30 minutes.

My kid goes to REACH homework help but they aren't turning in their homework.

We do not force children to do their homework. It is our responsibility to provide a space and time for them to get their homework done and provide assistance when they need it. It is the student's responsibility to bring their homework with them and use their homework time wisely. If a child does not finish his/her homework in the allotted time, s/he is still expected to complete it at home and turn it in when it is due. Talk to your classroom teacher if problems around homework persist or if you have questions about homework in general.
