The Wexford-Missaukee Intermediate School District is proud to partner with Horizon Books, Cadillac, to offer the third annual "Spring into Reading" as a way to wind down the 2024-25 school year!
Research is clear - around the world, educators, parents, and communities are struggling to keep kids focused on reading throughout their middle and high school years. By fourth grade, many students have learned a number of the basic processes of reading and writing; however, they still need to master literacy practices unique to different levels, disciplines, texts, and situations (NCTE, 2007)
The local districts that comprise the Wexford-Missaukee ISD service region continue to employ a variety of strategies to continue to increase adolescent interest in reading - both for purpose and for pleasure. Research has shown time and again that one of the best ways to encourage students to become lifelong readers is to offer a wide and varied selection of books from which they can choose. (NCTE, 2018)
The WMISD 6-12 ELA professional learning community represents teachers from around the entire ISD service region. 6th-12th grade Teachers from our local districts have worked with students to identify high-interest books for their classroom libraries. Working with our local partner, Horizon Books, teachers have built wish-lists. Books on the wishlist are both available online at horizonbooks.com, and in most cases, in store at the downtown Cadillac branch.
