Visual Phonics is a system of 45 hand signs and written symbols, which helps to make the connection between written and spoken language less confusing. The hand signs enhance students’ ability to “see” the sound as they are learning how sounds and words work.
Each written symbol is a visual representation of the hand sign and sometimes what is happening in the mouth. By focusing first on the sounds of language, Visual Phonics captures the power of the language before it becomes a confusion of rules.
Many different populations will benefit from Visual Phonics. Children in early education programs, “at risk readers”, special education programs, Deaf and hard of hearing students, students with hearing loss at all levels, The hand signs enhance students’ ability to “see” the sound as they are learning how sounds and words work.
