In 1917, James Fleming Hosic explained ‘that English teachers should lead students to read works in which they would, “find their own lives imagined in this larger life,” ‘and would gradually attain from the author’s clearer appreciation of human nature, a deeper and truer understanding. . . It should be the aim of the English teacher to make reading an unfailing resource and joy in the lives of all.” It is in this spirit that I teach literature, which to me is a profound source of wisdom and truth.
In my humble opinion, the classroom is a sacred space, a place for students to pursue self-improvement and intellectual enlightenment. While I strive to sharpen my students’ reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge how indebted I am to my students for teaching and inspiring me as much as I teach them. -- Joseph Leonard
