Alpha Psi Omega Constitution

Article I

Purpose  

The purpose of the Alpha Delta Nu chapter of Alpha Psi Omega is to reward dedication and artistic achievement in theatrical and performance activities at the College. By welcoming students to the organization, the society builds a community that works to support our department of Theatre and Performance and its student-led-initiatives. 

This nationally recognized honors fraternity is not intended to take the place of any existing theatre or performance 

organization.


Article II

Requirements

Section 1: To be eligible for membership in the Alpha Delta Nu chapter of Alpha Psi Omega the student must be regularly enrolled at The College of William & Mary. 

Clause 1: This includes members of the Joint Degree Program.  They will rush during a  year when physically at The College of William & Mary.

Section 2: In order to be considered for membership, prospective Alpha Psi Omega members must fulfill initiation requirements and point obligations. 

Clause 1: Special circumstances for Joint Degree Program students can be made at the discretion of the Executive Board.

Section 3: All students will be eligible for membership, no preference will be given to declared Theatre and Dance Majors and Minors.

Section 4: To be eligible for membership, the student must have at least a 2.5 Cumulative GPA at The College and at least a 3.0 Cumulative Major GPA in Theatre.

Clause 1: Non-majors will only need to provide their Cumulative GPA. No specific Major GPA is required. 

Section 5: Applicants must have theatrical work over the course of three collegiate semesters to be considered.

Section 6: To be eligible for membership the student must have accumulated at least 120 points from the categories as set forth in the Points System. Alpha Psi Omega encourages work in multiple fields of theatre and performance. 

Section 7: New members will be required to attend an introductory meeting post-initiation with the executive board.


Article III

Election to membership

Section 1: Candidates will apply for membership via a form provided by the current officers. 

Section 2: Officers will verify their candidacy based on the information provided on the application and the Points System outlined in Article X, Section 1 of this constitution.

Section 3: All initiates that qualify are invited to undergo the initiation process. During this process, initiates are required to:

1. Complete a Pledge Book with requirements confirmed with requirements confirmed by the current executive board for each initiation process.

2. Complete a Written Exam with questions decided upon by the current executive board for each initiation process.

3. Memorize a Shakespearean Monologue of 15 or more lines to recite at Initiation.


Article IV

Membership Obligations

Section 1: Members will be required to attend:

Clause 1: If the member is participating in the Playfest, they do not have to attend.

Clause 1: If the member is participating in production, it counts towards their attendance.

Clause 2: Exceptions can be made upon the discretion of the Executive Board.


Article IV

Officers and Duties

Section 1: The officers of this chapter will be the President, Vice-President, Business Manager, Secretary and Marketing Chair. 

Clause 1: The executive board must meet weekly to discuss the chapter and its activities. The time and day must be decided by the current executive board. The President may cancel meetings if agreed upon by the executive board and assign tasks to do in lieu of the meeting.

Section 2: The President will call meetings, preside at all meetings, and provide general supervision of the affairs of the society in consultation with the faculty Sponsor.

Section 3: The Vice-President will assist the President, assume the responsibilities of the President in case of their absence and any delegated tasks as assigned by the President and faculty sponsor. 

Section 4: The Business Manager will collect dues and assessments of members, pay bills sanctioned by the society, keep accounts of expenditures, and any delegated tasks as assigned by the President and faculty sponsor.

Section 5: The Secretary will keep minutes of the meetings, act as the liaison to the public and any delegated tasks as assigned by the President and faculty sponsor. 

Section 6: The Marketing Chair will organize the annual playbill, publicize events through social media, website and any posters around campus and any delegated tasks as assigned by the President and faculty sponsor. 

Section 7: At the time of election, the previous executive board is responsible for holding a meeting with the new executives to discuss responsibilities and chapter functions. 

Clause 1: The previous business manager must help the new business manager obtain access to the chapter’s banking and credit card system.

Section 8: A member of the executive board may be asked to leave their position through the following circumstances:

Clause 1: Two missed executive meetings in a row without excusal from the President and Vice President.

    Clause 2: 3/4ths of the active membership chapter signs a petition asking for removal.

Clause 3: All other executive members and the faculty sponsor agree the member of executive board is actively diminishing the chapter’s success and the chapter would be better off with a new executive member in their position.” 


Article V

Election of officers

Section 1: Officers for the following year will be nominated at a regular spring meeting post initiation and formally installed by the incumbent officers.

Section 2: Officers will be elected by a majority vote of the chapter.

Section 3: Each officer will take an oath pledging to carry out the duties of the office.

Section 4: The president of Alpha Psi Omega cannot also be elected president of the Theatre Student Association (TSA).


Article VI

Amendments

Section 1: There will be an initiation fee of $60.00, which includes the National Membership fee, the fraternity composite fee, and an Alpha Psi Omega Pin.

Section 2: Special assessments may be levied on members through inquiry with the executive board.

Section 3: Social dues of $40 will be paid to the Business Manager once a school year at the beginning of the school year. 

Clause 1: Newly initiated members will only pay the $60 initiation fee and are not required to pay the $40 social dues the school year they are initiated.


Article VII

Hazing and Conduct Policies 

Section 1:. This chapter adheres to Alpha Psi Omega’s national zero-tolerance hazing policy and shall comply with all university, state, and national regulations. 

Section 2: Members are expected to uphold the highest standards of conduct and respect. Activities associated with induction or membership must foster a welcoming, inclusive, and safe environment


Article VIII

Point System

Section 1: The point system for qualifying for APO membership is as follows:

Mainstage (Theatre and Dance) 

30 points:

Acting/Directing: Leads/major roles and dancers, Assistant/Associate Director, Assistant Musical Director, Choreographer

Design/Production: Stage Manager, Designers, Crew Heads (Props Head, Head Electrician, Wardrobe Head, etc.)

Literature/Admin: Dramaturg, Publicity Head, Script Analyst
Clause 1: In ensemble-style shows without clear leads, all roles will count as supporting                  

           

20 points:
Acting/Directing: Supporting roles and dancers, pit orchestra, Assistant/Associate Choreographer, Fight Director, Intimacy Coordinator,
Design/Production: Asst. Stage Manager, Asst. Designer, Crew Head assistants, Asst. Tech Director

Literature/Admin: Asst. Dramaturg, Publicity Asst.

 

10 points:

Acting/Directing: Minor roles 

Design/Technical: Any crew or production position not previously listed
Literature/Admin:  House Manager, any other admin position not previously listed

 

Second Season: COLL 400 Musical Theatre Performance, Dance Minors Concert, Senior Directorials, Premiere Theatre

20 points:

Acting/Directing: Leads/major roles and dancers, Director, Musical Director, Choreographer

Design/Technical: Stage Manager, Designers, Crew Heads (Props Head, Electrician Head, Wardrobe Head)

Literature/Admin: Playwright, Dramaturg, Publicity Head, Script Analyst

 

15 points:

Acting/Directing: Supporting roles, pit orchestra, Assistant Director, Asst. Musical Director, Asst./Associate Choreographer, Fight Director, Intimacy Coordinator

Design/Technical: Asst. Stage Manager, Asst. Designer, Crew Head Asst., Asst. Tech Director

Literature/Admin: Asst. Dramaturg, Publicity Asst.

 

10 points: 

Acting/Directing: Minor roles

Design/Technical: Any crew or production position not previously listed

Literature/Admin: House Manager, any other admin position not previously listed

 

Student Theatre and Performance, including but not limited to: Mint Theatre Company, Shakespeare in the Dark, TBD Theatre, The Satanic Mechanics, Sinfonicron, Drag N’ Drop, Inside Out Theatre, Syndicate, Pointe Blank, and Emerald Elite Stomp and Shake

15 points:

Acting/Directing: Leads/major roles and dancer, Director, Musical Director, Choreographer

Design/Technical: Stage Manager, Designers, Crew Heads (Props Head, Electrician Head, Wardrobe Head)

Literature/Admin: Dramaturg, Publicity, Playwright

 

10 points:

Acting/Directing: Supporting roles, pit orchestra, Assistant Director, Asst. Musical Director, Asst./Associate Choreographer, Fight Director, Intimacy Coordinator

Design/Technical: Asst. Stage Manager, Asst. Designer, Crew Head Asst., Asst. Tech Director 

Literature/Admin: Asst. Dramaturg, Publicity Asst., Script Analyst

 

5 points: 

Acting/Directing: Minor roles

Design/Technical: Any crew or production position not previously listed

Literature/Admin: House Manager, any other admin position not previously listed

 

Director’s Workshop, 24 Hour Play Fest

5 points:
All acting and crew roles.


Volunteering for TSA/APO Concessions

2 points:

Per day volunteered, max 10 points per semester.

 

Class Work (Must work on mainstage shows, and counts for one semester, not per show) 

10 points: 

Stagecraft, Intro to Stage Lighting, Makeup, Costume Construction, Intro to Theatre crew assignment, and any other class that works on a mainstage show


Theatre Internship (Taken for class credit, THEA 498)

10 points:

Students receive credit for a structured learning experience in a professional-quality theatre. This internship must be approved in advance by the theatre faculty; monitored and evaluated by a faculty member.

Clause 1: Virginia Theatre Association annual fall internship qualifies.

 

Department Employment

30 points per year:
Electrics Shop Assistant, Paint Shop Assistant, Scene Shop Carpenter, Costume Shop Assistant, Props Shop Assistant, Box Office Associate

 

Published Materials/Paper Contest Winners
30 points:
Points will be given for recognition of any theory, history, honors thesis, or other paper written

by a student and acknowledged by a contest or evaluation.

                                                                       

Section 2: Any position in the theatre department that has monetary compensation will be only counted once under the full year job section of the application.

Section 3: Any position that is required for the purpose of a class (Stagecraft, Stage Lighting, Intro to Theatre, etc) may only count once for the semester, not per show.

Section 4: If it should happen that a job meriting points is not listed under any of these categories, it can be brought to the attention of the Executive Board.

Section 5: Honorary membership may be bestowed on persons who have made special continued contributions to the theatre program at the College of William & Mary.

Section 6: Consideration may be given on a case-by-case basis if an applicant served more than one position on a given production.

Section 7: Consideration may be given on a case-by-case basis for members of the Joint Degree Program and students who have transferred into the College of William and Mary. 


Article IX

Amendments

Section 1: The articles of this constitution may be amended, revised or altered in whole or in part at any regular meeting by a 2/3 vote of the members of the chapter present, provided such amendment and a notice of the proposed vote is given to each member in writing at least one week prior to the vote. A quorum must be present to vote on and amend the constitution in any way.


Article X 

Bylaws

Section 1:Additional by-laws may be adopted at any meeting by a 2/3 vote of the active membership.

Section 2: The Pledge Book required by prospective members of the Alpha Delta Nu chapter should include the following:

1. The Greek Alphabet

2. The Official Colors of Alpha Psi Omega

3. The Name and Location of Three Other Casts of Alpha Psi Omega

4. Three Alpha Delta Nu alumni and their current projects/successes

5. The Shakespearean Monologue of 15 or more lines that the prospective member will recite at initiation
