First, here's the video:
The original storyboard is the following, which is notably different from the final product.
Basic Storyboard: Ball jumps down Arizona-like highway and comes across a cliff. We cut to the highway sign which says "Bounceville Across Huge Gap." We then cut back to the road and see the ball slowly inching back with a slingshot around it. We cut to the front of the slingshot seeing how far back the ball has pulled back and then it fires. The ball then stops mid-canyon and falls.
I had originally planned to use a Angry Birds-like slingshot to stretch it back really far to create anticipation before still ultimately failing to jump across the gap. However, this proved difficult because it seemed someone complicated to work with deformers and I didn't exactly know where to start. I had also considered a cannon, but the easiest solution was to just have the ball get a running start and get a really big jump.
I had originally also not had a hat, but I figured since I was going for the solid colored ball a hat would be good for indicating what direction it was facing, as well as the cartoon gag at the end.
Animation Principles Used:
1. Squash/Stretch - When the ball is bouncing, it will squash when preparing to jump and stretch at the beginning of the jump to clearly show the action being performed.
2. Staging - Showing the "Bounceville" road sign is presenting the motivation of the ball to the viewer, as it has no words to convey it itself.
3. Anticipation - When the ball is floating in mid-air, we know from the ball jumping that it adheres to gravity so the audience knows it must fall at some point, creating anticipation.
