A doctor’s physical required to participate. Doctors appointments can take time to complete, so schedule one sooner than later. Students can attend practice prior to getting a physical, but it is REQUIRED TO RUN IN A MEET.
Emergency forms are required for participation AFTER the first week of the season. These DO NOT require a doctor’s signature, so they are easy to complete and turn into the office.
FORMS CAN BE FOUND AT THE SCHOOL OFFICE OR HERE: https://www.wlwv.k12.or.us/Page/1297
$75 PAYMENT FOR CROSS COUNTRY CAN BE MADE HERE (covers track in spring as well): https://www.schoolpay.com/pay/for/Athey-Creek-Activities--Athletics/IdBOQ
You DO NOT have to attend every practice and meet.
There is no physical ability requirement for being a part of our team. We welcome all students to join us regardless of prior experience with running.
We take roll at the start of practice. Students MUST check out with a coach if leaving early.
ABOUT PRACTICE
Regular practices are Monday – Thursday after school from 3:45 to 5:00.
Activity bus leaves school at 5:15 to bring students home if needed.
NO PRACTICE on Back to School Night, Early Release Wednesdays, during fall conferences, or when school is closed.
During practice students typically run a total of 2 – 4 miles. Depending on the nature of the practice, these miles are completed during sustained runs of 1 – 3 miles in length, warm up laps, various drills, and active games.
Most runs are on campus, either around the perimeter of the campus or on the track.
Once a week we run off campus, crossing the bridge over the Tualatin River and continue onto small residential streets. Prior to running off campus, we discuss safety with the students: a coach leads the pack and another runs at the back, students remain on the sidewalk on Stafford Road.
Bring a FULL water bottle to practice REGARDLESS of weather. Staying hydrated is important on hot and cold days. Please bring a REUSABLE BOTTLE.
Come to practice wearing appropriate clothing for a workout. Running shoes, shorts or running pants. As the weather cools off, come to school with a warm layer. We do run outside when it is cold and raining.
Maintain a healthy lifestyle outside of practice to improve your running ability.
Eat well at lunch and have an energy-sustaining snack about an hour before practice.
Drink plenty of water throughout the day (at least 1 liter throughout the day). Don’t chug water and eat lots of food right before practice. That will lead to cramping and feeling sluggish with your running.
STRETCH and STRENGTHEN outside of practice using the warm up techniques we teach in practice. This is the best way to prevent running injuries.
HAVE FUN AND DON’T GIVE UP! Running hurts and even the best runners have their moments when they feel discouraged and want to quit. Stay driven, positive, and hopeful.
If you can, go for a run on the weekend to extend your workout. Weekends are great opportunities for longer runs with family and friends. Remember to be safe. Run with a family member or buddy. If not with you, a parent should know your running route.

6th and 7th Grade runs 2000 meters (1.25 miles) during a meet. 8th grade runs 3000 meters (1.86 miles). 6th and 7th graders can request to run the 3000 meter distance at meets; coaches will decide if that is appropriate.
If you need a bus back to ACMS from a meet, you MUST tell a coach at least one day in advance (coaches will remind students at practice). The bus will bring you back to ACMS where you must get picked up to go home. There is no activity bus at ACMS when meets are over.
ACMS uniforms are REQUIRED for running at the meet. You can wear other workout clothes during practice. Uniforms can be purchased from Hometown Sports (more info given at practice).
Good sportsmanship towards all runners from all teams is a must when at practice and at meets. Give positive encouragement towards your peers as you run and watch others run.
