NUTRITION EDUCATION AND PROMOTIONS GOALS:

Goal A: Provide nutrition education and engage in nutrition promotion.

1. Is part of not only health education classes but other subject areas

a. Hold Nutrition Week or Wellness Week.

b. Incorporate materials of healthy lifestyles and nutrition in PE classes.

2. Includes enjoyable, developmentally appropriate, culturally relevant participatory activities.

a. PE and recess use appropriate activities.

b. Theme days for lunch.

3. Promotes fruits, vegetables, whole grain, low fat and fat free dairy products and healthy foods.

a. Hang posters in lunch room and Commons that promote healthy eating.

b. When writing the daily menus, show which food groups the items belong to so students become aware of what they eat.

NUTRITION GUIDELINES FOR ALL FOODS AVAILABLE ON CAMPUS GOALS:

Goal A: Snacks and Celebration

1. Assess if and when to offer snacks based on timing of meals.

2. Provide list of healthy snacks and celebration practices.

3. Encourage healthful snacks.

4. Administration and teachers evaluate their celebration practices that involve food during the day.

Goal B: Vending and Concessions

1. Food items sold outside the meal program will offer some healthful alternatives.

2. Concession stand managers will investigate offering some healthy alternative snacks.

Goal C: Meals served through the Nation School lunch and Breakfast program will:

1. Be appealing and attractive to children.

2. Be served in clean and pleasant settings.

3. Meet nutrition requirements established by State and Feds.

4. Offer fruits and vegetables, legumes and whole grains.

5. Serve only low fat (1%) and fat free milk and nutritionally equivalent non-dairy alternatives.

Goal D: Qualified nutrition professionals will administer the meal programs.

1. Provide continuing professional development for all nutrition professionals.

2. Provide staff development programs that include appropriate certification and/or training programs for child nutrition directors, nutrition managers and cafeteria workers, according to their levels of responsibility.

OTHER SCHOOL BASED ACTIVITIES GOALS:

Goal A: Students need opportunities for physical activities beyond the PE class.

1. Teachers will be encouraged to provide short physical activity breaks between lessons or classes where appropriate.


Goal B: District will support parents’ efforts to provide a healthy diet and physical activity.

1. Encourage parents to pack healthy lunches and snacks.

2. Provide a list of healthy snacks.

3. Include in newsletters information about physical activity opportunities and healthy eating practices.

4. Encourage parents to share their healthy food practices as classroom guest speakers.

Goal C: District will offer and encourage more physical activity or game rewards.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY GOALS:

Goal A: District will provide PE.

1. For all students in grades PreK-12 for the entire school year.

2. Taught by certified PE teacher.

3. Include students with disabilities.

Note: Students with special care needs may be provided in alternative educational settings.

4. Engage students in moderate to vigorous activity during at least 50% of PE class.

Goal B: Elementary should provide recess for students.

1. At least 20 minutes per day.

2. Preferably outside.

3. Encourage moderate to vigorous physical activity verbally and through the provision of space and equipment.

4. Discourage extended periods (2 or more hours) of inactivity.

Goal C: Employees should not use physical activity (running laps, push-ups, etc…) or withhold opportunities for PE for punishment.

Goal D: Administration and teachers will explore alternatives for punishment and options for alternate recess activities and getting make-up work completed.
