Watch this space for more information about the WLIS choir this school year. This is an after school activity that meets regularly on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We plan to start up choir rehearsals for the year on Thursday, August 27, 2026. All students are encouraged to join, grades 4-6. No audition required! Please see the registration information below if your student has an interest in joining.
Registration is open for the 2026-2027 WLIS Choir season! There are two steps to getting registered. Please complete both steps of the registration process below (if you have any questions about this don't hesitate to contact Miss Hale.)
Step One: Fill out the Online Registration Form linked here.
Step Two: Print and sign the Fee & Permission/Commitment Form for the year.
Be sure to send this second form with a payment of $45 for the participation fee in a well-marked envelope labeled "Choir Fee." This can be brought to the main office, or Miss Hale directly. The money collected goes directly towards new materials and sheet music used in choir. If this fee creates a financial hardship for you or your family, scholarships are made available to those in need. You will be able to indicate that on the "Online Registration Form."
Also, please consider volunteering to provide a ride home from rehearsal after it is over, and possibly to and from concerts for our students who would not be able to participate otherwise.
We will rehearse on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 2:20-3:30 p.m., beginning on Thursday, August 27th, 2026. Please note that choir rehearsal will be cancelled on the second Tuesday of each month, so that Miss Hale is able to attend WLIS's staff meetings.
Our performance uniform is a red polo shirt with the West Lafayette Music logo, nice blue jeans, and dark shoes. These polo shirts will be available to order in early fall, with a fee of $14 for a new shirt. Please note: The choir, band, and orchestras use the exact same shirt for all performances. If you already have a shirt from a previous year, or a used WLIS MUSIC shirt from a former student (an older sibling), feel free to use the shirt you already own. Additionally, if your student already has another red polo (golf) style shirt in their possession, that would also be perfectly appropriate.
Thanks to some generous donations, we may have some gently used choir shirts available to borrow for the year at no cost to you. If your family would like to borrow a shirt, please contact Miss Hale.
Any time school is closed due to weather or other serious event, all after-school events are automatically cancelled. When school is closed, please stay home, and stay safe!
Have you missed a choir rehearsal (or you know that you will need to miss an upcoming rehearsal)? Please fill out the Choir Absence Form as soon as possible. You can submit this form electronically (preferable) or you may submit a hard copy of the form to me (LINK FOR HARD FORM DOWNLOAD). To reduce traffic jams and ensure student safety, we will dismiss our regular Tuesday and Thursday choir practices from WLIS Door #1 (the main entrance). Please observe the same pickup traffic procedures as you would for end-of-the-day dismissal. Be sure to pull all the way forward so we can use the entire sidewalk.
Students should be picked up from rehearsal at 3:30 p.m. Please send Miss Hale an email if you must be late picking up your child.
The WLIS Choir was founded in 1988 by Mr. Randy Leazenby. This is a non-auditioned group made up of students in grades 4-6. The choir performs more challenging musical selections than the regular general music classes. We perform throughout the year at school concerts, community venues, and events.
The choir is currently directed by Miss Emmy Hale for the 2026-2027 academic year. This is her second year teaching at WLIS and directing the choir. Miss Hale received her bachelor's degree in Vocal and General Music Education at Ball State University in December 2024. Miss Hale is a soprano singer, who has been involved in a range of choral groups for the past nine years. She has taken private vocal lessons for eight years including her time at Ball State University. With a passion for musical theater, she has also taken part in over twenty different productions including musicals and operas with notable roles as Johanna in Sweeney Todd and Principal Mullins in School of Rock. She is very excited to make an impact on the choral program here at West Lafayette Intermediate School.
Circle the State With Song registration will not begin until mid-November. This is a performative event hosted by the Indiana Music Education Association (IMEA) Students will perform at Crawfordsville Senior High School on February 13th, 2027. There is a $30 fee to register with limited partial scholarships available.
Circle the State With Song rehearsals will take place after our regularly scheduled choir times from 3:30 to 4:45 on Tuesdays. These extra rehearsals will start in January. With such limited time to prepare, please be aware that students are expected to use the supplied listening tracks and rehearse on their own time. The tracks will be posted here when they become available. Students do not have to participate in Honor Choir to do Circle the State With Song. Click here to see information on their official website.
All-State Honor Choir is a prestigious event, where top singers from schools around the state meet and rehearse advanced material, culminating in a final mass performance. Students who are interested in participating in this event must record an audition with Miss Hale, that will be submitted for review. These audition tapes will be judged by officials from the Indiana Music Education Association (IMEA), where they will make their selections as to who will be admitted to participate in the event. Click here to view more information on their official website.
Students who are participating in Honor Choir must also do Circle the State with Song. Please consider that there is a $200 fee to register, with limited partial scholarships available. Students will stay overnight on January 16th and perform on the 17th at the Embassy Theatre in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Honor Choir rehearsals will take place after our regularly scheduled choir times from 3:30 to 4:45 on Tuesdays once auditions have been finalized. These rehearsals will begin late November. Students are also expected to use the supplied listening tracks and rehearse on their own. These tracks will be posted here when they become available.
