WIDA is an assessment that informs schools about the English proficiency of a student. If your child is new to the country or has never taken WIDA before, they will take a WIDA Screener that will inform educational decisions. Every winter, multilingual students will take the WIDA ACCESS to determine their growth in the English language. There are four domains assessed in WIDA: listening, reading, speaking, and writing. You can click the "WIDA" link below to read more about the ACCESS assessment in your home language.
The WIDA assessment helps determine if your child qualifies for ML class. ML class is a small group setting where your child will focus on the needed skills to be proficient in English. We will focus on reading, writing, and grammar. Your child may miss time in their general education classroom, but their grades will not be affected in any way. ML class typically tries to meet at a time that works for your child and the classroom teacher.
Still Read in your Home Language: Your native language is your identity; it tells others about your family and where you come from. Your child can be more proficient in English when they are comfortable and confident in their first language.
Discuss the Pictures in a Book: Using picture books allows children to see characters and settings, but can also help them make connections to what they are reading.
Talk about New Vocabulary: One of the biggest aspects of learning English is the use of vocabulary. To become familiar with the world around them, discuss different words for things. Whether you're walking around the grocery store, walking through the park, or using something new at home, your child can learn just from experiencing the world around them!
Ask Questions: Encourage your child to engage with a book by asking them questions. Ask who their favorite character is or what they think will happen next in the story. Be sure to ask questions about your child's day and what they are learning at school!
Take Turns Reading: Encouraging your child to read with you is also beneficial. It takes the pressure off of trying to read an entire story alone. Plus, quality time is important when learning a new language- you can grow together!
Be Patient: Learning English can be difficult and frustrating. It is important to be patient and encourage your child to keep going. Growth of any kind should be celebrated.
