Pioneer High School Track and Field Team Handbook
Academic Eligibility:
PHS Students must turn in all paperwork completed with current information, and current physical forms online. Students must be
cleared from Pioneer’s Athletic Department before he/she can participate in practices and meets. This clearance goes through the Athletic Director.
You are a student athlete and the work STUDENT comes first. Manage your time wisely and keep up with all studies. Academics should be your number one priority - that is what school is all about. As a member of the team, you have agreed to complete your studies in your “free time” not during practice time. You can accomplish both goals by organizing yourself.
In order to maintain your eligibility on any team at PHS you must maintain certain academic standards (2.0 GPA) with no more than one F. If you are having academic problems in any class, let the coaching staff know as soon as possible so that arrangements can be made to assist you in improving your grades. Don’t wait until progress reports to let the coaching staff know that you are having an academic problem. By that time it may be too late to maintain your athletic eligibility.
All Athletes must be registered on Final Forms.
Athletic Fees and Fundraisers:
All academic and athletic fees must be paid to the Pioneer Student Store to participate.
All athletes must participate in our Eteamsponsor Fundraiser
All athletes must volunteer for area Fun-Run fundraisers
Practice Guidelines and Rules
You must be at all practices and on time each day. (3:50 pm - 5:20 pm) Monday - Friday, with proper equipment and prepared to workout. If you arrive late, be prepared to have practice consequences. If coming late becomes a problem, then you may be suspended from the team.
If you are not able to attend practice you must notify me via the Missing Practice Form in Advance. If coming late to practice please come with a note from the place you are coming from; teacher, club, doctor, etc.
Absences from practice must be notified to me no later than 24 hours prior to the missed practice date. Valid excuses are doctor appointments and family emergencies. Excused absences do not include serving school detention, doing homework, being at other clubs or sports teams events.
If you miss a practice without notice it is considered unexcused. Unexcused missed practices will result in practice consequences and my result in missing meets. Two consecutive unexcused, non communicated absences from practice will result in non participation in the next meet. Three unexcused absences could result in missing the meet after that.
Attendance at practice means completing the entire workout for your group including warm up and cool down. You can not leave practice without dismissal from your coach.
We will practice daily. Note that we will occasionally end practice before 5:20 pm.
Meet Guidelines and Rules:
When a bus or other district transportation is provided all athletes will ride the bus that is provided.
All athletes must stay for the duration of any meet and may not leave until all events are finished (thus supporting and being part of the TEAM and all its members)
Failure to show up for any meet without prior approval will result in automatic suspension. You have the meet schedule, make sure you work schedule, academics, appointments all work around it. Nothing will cause resentment, bitterness, and bad feelings more than leaving teammates without their fellow PHS Track and Field athletes during a meet. If you are registered to compete in a meet, make sure you are there. Your coaches and teammates are counting on you.
Failure to compete in any end of season or post season meet will be seen as quitting. You will forfeit any titles, or awards and be removed from the team roster.
Look and act like an athlete at all times
Stay away from junk foods until you are done competing at the meet
At the conclusion of the meet immediately clean up your area of all trash and water bottles, regardless of if they are yours or not.
When returning home an athlete may ride home with a relative who is known to the coaching staff after the ending team huddle and signing out on the official clipboard. Otherwise athletes must return home on the district bus.
Nutrition, Sickness, Injury Guidelines and Rules
All sickness and/or injuries must be reported to the coaching staff. If it is serious you will be expected to see your family physician, which we can refer you to. If you need to miss practice because you are sick refer to Practice Rules #2
Missing practice due to an injury is not acceptable. Practice time for an athlete with an injury might not look identical to a non injured teammate but is just as important for a speedy recovery. Most injuries require ice, therapy, stretching and strengthening for the recovery process. It is the job of our staff to help monitor and facilitate this process and it is done during regular practice time.
An athlete must be well enough to complete practice the two days prior to a meet in order to compete.
Athletes are expected to provide their own food and water at meets and practice
Healthy light weight snacks are recommended.
It is important to get proper sleep and nutrition prior to practices and meets in order to compete at your maximum potential.
