Ms. Avalos has lived in Yolo County for 30+ years. She lives in Woodland with her two cats and one of her two sons. Her youngest son finished at UC Santa Cruz and moved to Portland. Her oldest has his AA from Woodland Community College and is currently getting a second AA at Sierra College. They are both alumni of Beamer Park Elementary Spanish Immersion program. The family enjoys camping, traveling, old/new movies, board games, puzzles, Rivercats’ baseball, and science fiction books/movies. In addition Ms. Avalos enjoys playing in several bands, singing in her church choir, and geocaching. She performed in June 2017 at Carnegie Hall with the Yolo Community Band. She performed in spring 2018 in New Orleans with the California Repercussions Band.
Ms. Avalos graduated from UC Davis with both elementary and secondary teaching credentials. Since then she added a CLAD certification, which allows her to work with children who may be in various stages of learning English. She has been teaching in the public schools since 1985. Before that she taught in private schools and preschools. Ms. Avalos taught mostly first grade in Sacramento for ten years before switching to Maxwell Elementary School. This is her twenty-fifth year at Maxwell. She does speak some Spanish (and can usually understand even more) so she lets the Spanish-speaking students know that in times of need they can communicate in Spanish. However English is the language of instruction.
In the 2017-18 year Ms. Avalos participated in a Technology Cohort in WJUSD. She passed the first Google certification. In the spring there was a Technology Fair where the year long projects of all the participants was on display. Here is the link to Ms. Avalos' project. Innovator Website
Ms. Avalos continued with the second level of the Technology Cohort in 2018-1019 which included passing the Level 2 Google Certification.
