There are two tests that English Language Learners take throughout the year:
1. NYSITELL- New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners:
This test is used to initially asses English proficiency skills of new entrants (students who are new to the country or school).
Prior to taking this test, a Home Language Questionnaire (HLQ) is sent home, and if it is indicated that another language other than English is spoken at home, ENL teachers conduct an individual interview with students.
2. NYSESLAT- New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test:
This test is administered in the Spring of each school year and has four parts:
Speaking
Listening
Reading
Writing
The purpose of this test is to assess a student's English language proficiency level.
