New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners (NYSITELL)- new entrants only

  • the purpose of the NYSITELL is to assess the English language proficiency of new entrants whose home language is a language other than English, as indicated on their Home Language Questionnaire
  • it is used to determine if the student is in need of English as a New Language (ENL) services
  • students will be categorized into one of four levels (Entering, Emerging, Expanding, and Commanding), which will determine the number of hours of services each student will receive
  • if a student scores Commanding, he/she does not qualify for the ENL services

New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT)- all ELLs

  • administered in the spring of each school year
  • students in ENL levels Entering through Expanding take this test
  • banded grade leveled tests (K, 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-12)
  • Includes 4 different areas: speaking, listening, reading, writing
  • aligned with the NYS Common Core Learning Standards
  • assess students English language proficiency level
  • student scores - available in September
