Helping Your Child Read At Home

Set aside a time each day for reading.
Find a comfortable place to read with your child.
First, look through the book, discuss the pictures. Read the book aloud to your child to model good expression. Make sure to point to each word as you read.
Next, partner read with your child, taking turns reading each page and finger pointing.
Finally, listen to your child read the story and finger point independently.
After the story has been read these three times, you can ask your child to retell the story or describe a favorite part. You may also point to 3 or 4 words in the story and see if your child can figure them out by using the picture, the beginning sound or rereading the sentence.

If your child makes an error...

Wait several seconds to allow your child to self-correct.

Give the following responses as needed:

What word would make sense here? Take a guess.

Use the picture to help figure out the word.

Reread the sentence to see if that helps.

Look at how the word begins. Get your mouth ready to say that sound.

Skip over the word and read to the end of the sentence, then go back.
