Parents can help improve reading comprehension by interacting with the story material. Please utilize the following reading activities.
Before Reading:
Look at the title and illustrations together. Predict what the story will be about.
Discuss what you both already know about the topic of the story.
Read the first page and then ask your child to predict what might happen next.
During Reading:
Encourage your child to picture in his/her mind what is happening in the story.
Ask what might happen next in the story.
Have your child change his/her predictions as the story provides new information.
Ask how a character might feel.
Talk about the illustrations.
After Reading:
Have your child retell the story in his/her own words.
Create a new ending together.
Retell the story from another character’s point of view.
Have your child illustrate his/her favorite part of the story.
Comprehension questions you can ask your child after the story:
What part of the story was your favorite? Why?
Who is _________________?
How are characters __________ and ________________ different? How are they alike?
What things do the pictures show us that we didn’t learn in the words of the story? (Examine the pictures together.)
What problem did the character (s) have in the story? How was the problem solved?
What was the story mostly about?
How would you solve the problem if you were in the story?
What questions would you ask the characters if you could talk to them?
What happened at the beginning? The middle? The end?
How could the characters have prevented the problem in the first place?
Why do you think the author wrote this story?
Does this story remind you of another story, TV show, movie? Which one and why?
