Course overview: This year students will be challenged to become better writers, readers, and thinkers. Our journey will provide opportunities to explore the human spirit through many different types of texts, from traditional novels and short stories to speeches, films, and even images. These texts will be a launching point for students to effectively construct and communicate ideas and arguments of their own.
Supplies:
YOU MUST HAVE YOUR CHARGED CHROMEBOOK EVERY DAY.
A notebook dedicated to English
Highlighters, blue/black ink pens, Post-it Notes
Class Rules and Expectations:
Treat everyone with kindness and respect.
Be prepared.
Complete all assignments and daily activities.
Actively participate in class.
If you are absent, check in with me or a classmate and consult the Google Classroom to complete missed work.
Follow the West Islip Academic Honesty Policy.
If a problem arises, please reach out and let me know you need some help, but not at 11:30 the night before a project is due!

Mastery Learning:
Oral and written feedback will be given throughout the writing process
Teachers will have the discretion to provide mastery learning opportunities for any assessments agreed upon by the entire team. Test corrections will be awarded half credit.
Students must complete additional learning activities to demonstrate progress toward mastery before being given another opportunity for a mastery learning retake or assignment.
Not all assessments will include a mastery learning opportunity. Before students will be given a mastery learning assessment, they must first complete additional learning activities to demonstrate progress toward mastery.

Reading Assessments 35%
Writing Assessments 35%
Speaking, Listening, and Language Assessments 30%
