Fun Activities for Fine Motor Skills

Fine Motor Skills

Activities that encourage gripping, pinching, and manipulating small objects develop fine motor skills.

You can help at home by:

Zipping

Buttoning

Cutting (cut pictures from magazines that begin with the letters we are studying). Remind your child that he/she needs to use the “strong hand” (thumb up) for cutting, and the “helping hand” to guide the paper.

Using small objects like sequins and pom-poms for decorating crafts (pincer grip)

Beading (you can even use pasta to make necklaces or bracelets)

Using play dough and clay to strengthen the hand muscles and help with coordination

Tearing paper to make a collage or design

Writing and drawing with pencils, crayons or markers

Coloring and painting

Baking cookies (rolling dough, using cookie cutters, decorating)
