AI & HE
Mark Corbett Wilson, Technologian for the Western Institute for Social Research in Berkeley, California, presented "Complexity, Technology, Research, & Learning: ChatGPT is “Education’s Shiny New Thing”" June 24 2023. I then presented "Artificial Intelligence & Higher Education - Theory" Sept. 30th 2023 and "Artificial Intelligence & Higher Education - Practice" Oct. 14 2023. I also made a shorter presentation, "Using Algorithms for Story Work", for StoryCenter.org Oct. 24 2023. All errors are mine.

01:11:29 Robert Brem: SkyNet
01:11:44 Galal Galal-Edeen (he): Reacted to "SkyNet" with 👍🏽
01:18:20 Marilyn Jackson: I heard that in that lawsuit in which a lawyer relied on AI, cases were referred to be the judge determined those cases did not exist.
01:18:57 Julie Whitehead: The AI Research Assistant, https://elicit.org/
01:23:49 Galal Galal-Edeen (he): Generative Pretrained Transformers
01:24:29 Galal Galal-Edeen (he): Gen: it generates text
01:24:57 Galal Galal-Edeen (he): Pretrained: it learns from a very large body of text
01:25:09 Emile Fromet de Rosnay: Reacted to "Pretrained: it learn..." with 👍
01:26:04 Galal Galal-Edeen (he): Transformers: the particular AI technology that is used to build the linguistic models (there are videos: “what are transformers” online)
01:27:20 Galal Galal-Edeen (he): Sorry, I’ll need to leave for a few minutes
01:28:03 Tom Haymes: Sorry. I had to deal with a family emergency. Was gone for about 20 minutes there.
01:28:43 Ahmed Tealeb: Reacted to "The AI Research Assi..." with 👍
01:29:22 Tom Haymes: The most powerful combination is humans working WITH technology, not against it.
01:32:30 Tom Haymes: Neuroscience developed out of computer science, not the other way around.
01:34:13 Tom Haymes: We have become hostage to our languages. GPT technologies are challenging our Stockholm Syndrome.
01:34:56 Galal Galal-Edeen (he): Sorry: how will the recording and the slides be sent to attendees?
01:35:17 Tom Haymes: Is anyone’s material really theirs? My material is largely derived from other people
01:35:39 Tom Haymes: We are all building on 2500 years of written legacy.
01:36:40 Tom Haymes: Our systems are built on textual technologies. These have little do with actual learning.
01:37:53 Tom Haymes: As Kevin Kelly says, we are our own technology. Cooking and fire have physically changed our biology.
01:37:57 Tom Haymes: I have that book
01:39:25 Tom Haymes: “I’m a standup philosopher” “Oh, you’re a bullshitter.” - Mel Brooks
01:40:42 Tom Haymes: How much of the discourse between us and our students is bullshit?
01:41:18 Emile Fromet de Rosnay: Even BS can be heuristic
01:41:46 Tom Haymes: Yes. We need to teach our students to process bullshit.
01:44:46 Mark Wilson: The slides: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1RaE0ImqaaRWPdjf78MeV5S6kIShnp-Gp8eHfC2yPDPo/edit#slide=id.g254bea8a7a2_0_44
01:45:03 Emile Fromet de Rosnay: Reacted to "The slides: https://..." with ❤️
01:45:36 Marilyn Jackson: Thanks for the slides, Mark!
01:45:46 Robert Brem: Notes are only viewable through WISR google? it wsays I need toa request acess
01:47:14 Marilyn Jackson: He'll have to adjust the settings
01:47:25 Tom Haymes: Subconscious, maybe?
01:48:24 Marilyn Jackson: Dreams are in images and sound
01:49:53 Cassandra Upshaw: There is a lot of talking in my dreams...
01:50:20 Marilyn Jackson: Music too
01:50:59 Galal Galal-Edeen (he): Replying to "The slides: https://..."
Many thanks, but access needs to be granted, so I just requested it from the account Galaledeen@aucegypt.edu
01:51:41 Galal Galal-Edeen (he): Reacted to "Notes are only viewa..." with 👍🏽
01:53:06 Mark Wilson: Sorry everyone, I changed the permissions for the slides. Can you access them now?
01:53:31 Emile Fromet de Rosnay: Reacted to "Sorry everyone, I ch..." with 👍
01:53:50 Tom Haymes: Sounds like a job for AI.
01:54:07 Tom Haymes: Yes. I can see the slides now.
01:54:43 Tom Haymes: Have we already created an AI in our human system?
01:54:46 Mark Wilson: Great!
01:55:11 Mark Wilson: I collected resources too. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ELYfEXGrSvh2y6pKd6ne4093C_0uPUYmUWSJI0ltXNc/
01:55:18 Cassandra Upshaw: EXACTLY!!
01:59:52 Tom Haymes: Happy to.
02:01:16 Mark Wilson: Michael Meade - dreams
02:01:37 Cassandra Upshaw: Noted!
02:02:41 Emile Fromet de Rosnay: “Incremental leap” (oxymoron?)
02:03:22 Cassandra Upshaw: Increments can be tiny or vast
02:06:38 Emile Fromet de Rosnay: Thanks everyone, I have to go. Great presentation and discussion!
02:06:51 Mark Wilson: Thanks Emile!
02:14:05 Cassandra Upshaw: A possible benefit from the pandemic is the current zeitgeist of scientific openness as the sense of urgency drove the proprietary mindset somewhat in to the background. Perhaps the same will be true with AI
02:16:03 Robert Brem: I think that was BenjaminFranklin on "shorter"
02:19:02 Cassandra Upshaw: Gotta go. Thanks, this was very informative!
02:27:45 John Bilorusky: Apologies but I have to leave, and I am giving Mark control of the meeting. Robert, Tom, Mark, and others--great ideas and conversation. Sorry I'm late to go elsewhere.
