This Monday some of our GEAR UP students were invited to a special showing of “A Million Miles Away” based on the life of Dr. Jose Hernandez, a Mexican American Astronaut. Students were able to enjoy the movie and also have a Q &A with Dr. Hernández and actor Bobby Soto. It was an amazing experience! Thank you to, Lone Star National Bank, DHR Health and Region One Esc for the invite to this incredible event.  



STC All Access – Round 2 (April 23):  REGISTERING OUR WILDCATS! 

This week, a second round of our GEAR UP cohort had the opportunity to visit South Texas College and enroll for their upcoming Summer or Fall semester. Students sat through the NEW Student Orientation, visited with Student Financial Services to check on their current status, visited with an advisor to go over their degree plan, and then registered for their classes at the Enrollment Center. We are so excited to be able to do this for our students! Paws up! 


4/17 Vaquero Days (Round 1):  REGISTERING OUR WILDCATS! 

This Wednesday we were able to take some of our GEAR UP students to UTRGV to enroll for their upcoming Summer or Fall semester. Students sat through the NEW Student Orientation, visited with Student Financial Services to check on their current status, visited with an advisor to go over their degree plan and then registered for their classes. At the end of the day students were also able to leave  the orientation with their UTRGV Student ID. We are so excited to be able to do this for our students! #V’sUp! 


Thank you to all the students and parents that joined us this weekend for “Saturday's to Check Off Your GEAR UP List  ”. This weekend we continued completing student and parent FAFSA applications. Don’t forget we still have one more date on Saturday, April 27th to assist you with any financial aid inquiries you may have. *Bringing your own device is required*. Students may sign up for this event by contacting their GEAR UP Facilitators and setting an appointment. #EastSide 

Thank you to the parents that joined us for our last TOT for this school year! We are so proud of all of you for your hard work and determination. As GEAR UP parents, YOU are the voice for our community and we love that YOU get to share the GEAR UP message . Thank you to Dr. Daniel King for his motivational speech and to Region One Esc for hosting this event. Our parents got to enjoy an afternoon of post-secondary advice and laughter. #GoWildcats

Our SENIOR SIT DOWN was a TOTAL SUCCESS! A BIG thank you to Chief of Police, Joel Rivera, Weslaco City Mayor, Adrian Gonzalez , WEHS Principal, Dr. David Gamboa , and all of the community booths that joined us today. We hope all of our senior male students felt empowered , supported , and motivated as a NEW stage in their lives is about to begin. Thank you to everyone that made this event possible and to our GEAR UP Facilitators, Mrs. Cavazos & Ms. Garza, for putting together such an amazing event!  


Today, our GEAR UP students had an opportunity to meet Physician Associate Mrs. Vanessa Lujan . Mrs. Lujan is a PROUD graduate of the WEHS Class of 2015. She graduated from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in 2022 and is currently practicing her profession in a local office with Kaizen Clinical Partners. Our students got to learn all about what the PA program is like and about the competitiveness and dedication of the profession. Thank you to Mrs. Lujan for mentoring our students and sharing all about the PA life! Our next Alumni Chat will take place next month. Keep an eye out! You won’t want to miss it. 

Thank you to UTSA Recruiter, Mr. De La Cruz for visiting us this morning! He was able to talk to our students about the many opportunities at the University of Texas in San Antonio. WEHS students were able to inquire about scholarships, possible upcoming visits, and ask questions about tuition and requirements.  We are excited for our students committing to attend UTSA next fall! Go Wildcats!

We will be hosting our third Wildcat Alumni Chat this Thursday,

November 30th, during Lunch 1 @ 11:10 AM. This event will take place in the library & we will have passes ready for you to pick up on Thursday morning in our office (room#129).


Our alumni visit will be coming from Mr. Daniel Roque, Class of 2019, who is an automotive technician and has worked with companies such as Lexus, Cadillac and Chevrolet. SEL RAlly 2023

On November 16th some of our GEAR UP students had an opportunity to attend this year’s Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Rally sponsored by GEAR UP and the WISD Student Support Services Department. Through this rally, students were able to learn more about skills towards improving their social awareness, emotional regulation, and self-efficacy. Aside from learning about SEL skills, all students attending the event were provided with a calming bracelet and a SayItWith-Music presentation.

This Thursday, our GEAR UP students and parents had an opportunity to learn about developing literacy at home through special topics and literacy strategies. UPCOMING EVENT: 

GEAR UP: College Now-Career Connected! is excited to bring you the family literacy event, Nuestra Historia Sigue…, to be held on November 9, 2023 at the Mission Event Center at 200 N. Shary Rd., Mission, TX. It will be a memorable experience! Students and parents will learn the importance of developing literacy at home through special topics and literacy strategies to promote a supportive environment, partake in a book distribution, and meet and greet world-renowned and local authors to encourage literacy.

A writing seminar is coming up on October 31st. It will be GEARED towards students pending a college entrance essay or students having a hard time writing their essays. This will be a 3 day session and you must be able to attend all three sessions.

GEAR UP SPIRIT WEEK! 

This Tuesday, some of our GEAR UP students had the opportunity to attend the GEAR UP & GO Workforce Readiness Institute. Through this institute, our students got to develop their employability skills such as resume writing, interview skills, teamwork, problem solving, and dressing for success. Awesome job Wildcats!


Students and parents had an opportunity to meet and greet local authors and explore literacy strategies to promote a supportive reading environment at home. Our GEAR UP students enjoyed receiving free books ️and listening to testimonials about the importance of reading.

This Summer three of our GEAR UP girls were selected to participate in the DHR Junior Clinical Research Internship taking place in Edinburg, Texas. The purpose of this internship was to expose and engage students in the discipline of translational and clinical research as well as medicine and allied health sciences. Our girls had an amazing time and we wish the best in their upcoming graduation from the program on August 5th, 2023. Congratulations Judith Gomez, Ashley Solis and Trista Valdez!

We are hosting our GEAR UP Summer Camp to help Juniors prepare for the Math TSIA or RLA TSIA test. This is a great opportunity to receive additional instruction and strategies to pass the college entrance exam! Spots are limited, so sign up as soon as possible.

On Wednesday, May 17th, some of our GEAR UP students got to participate in Region One’s Transition Fair. Our students were able to meet with employers, universities, and over 40 vendors/booths to explore their opportunities for post-secondary success! It was an amazing opportunity for our Wildcats to discover their unique potential to create a bright future after high school!

On Friday, 5 de Mayo we had our final Trainer Of Trainers (TOT) Family Event at Region One. Our GEAR UP parents and GEAR UP facilitators got to enjoy a day of learning and planning for the GEAR UP year to come.  Thank you parents for all your help and support this school year!  

A BIG thanks to Attorney Mrs. Leah Wise for her donation at our Women's Empowerment Event this semester. Our GEAR UP student Emily Iraheta-Molina was the raffle W I N N E R of an Apple Watch Series 8 ! Congratulations Emily! & Again thank you to Mrs.Wise for her time and advice with our EAST girls! #EastSide #STRONGside



This is a great opportunity for female high school students interested in the area of Robotics. The camp will be at UTRGV from June 26th-30th. The camps will run Monday-Thursday from 12:00 – 5:00 pm. The final competition will be Friday from 8:00 am to noon with a closing ceremony at 6:00 pm.

Our EAST boys had the opportunity to participate in the T.I.E.S. (Together In Education for Success) Masters experience in which they met industry members from all over the RGV. These industry members mentored our students as they played golf and discussed knowledge and skills needed to pursue a career in their respective fields. Our students gained valuable information about financial literacy/financial aid and the use of soft skills. A B I G thanks to Coach Riojas for assisting our students at the event!
