*RECOGNITION POST* This past Friday some our Seniors graduated with their Associates from South Texas College after taking dual enrollment classes. We are so proud of all of our students and their accomplishments! The GOAL is graduation and post-secondary readiness and you are already on your way!
Thank you to all the GEAR UP students that joined us this past week for our 2 intense days of Mastery Prep Camp GEARED towards completing the TSIA2 Math and Reading. We are only 4 weeks away from GRADUATION and still working hard towards accomplishing all of our GEAR UP objectives. #GoWildcats!

This Monday some of our GEAR UP students were invited to a special showing of “A Million Miles Away” based on the life of Dr. Jose Hernandez, a Mexican American Astronaut. Students were able to enjoy the movie and also have a Q &A with Dr. Hernández and actor Bobby Soto. It was an amazing experience! Thank you to, Lone Star National Bank, DHR Health and Region One Esc for the invite to this incredible event.
STC All Access – Round 2 (April 23): REGISTERING OUR WILDCATS!
This week, a second round of our GEAR UP cohort had the opportunity to visit South Texas College and enroll for their upcoming Summer or Fall semester. Students sat through the NEW Student Orientation, visited with Student Financial Services to check on their current status, visited with an advisor to go over their degree plan, and then registered for their classes at the Enrollment Center. We are so excited to be able to do this for our students! Paws up!
4/17 Vaquero Days (Round 1): REGISTERING OUR WILDCATS!
This Wednesday we were able to take some of our GEAR UP students to UTRGV to enroll for their upcoming Summer or Fall semester. Students sat through the NEW Student Orientation, visited with Student Financial Services to check on their current status, visited with an advisor to go over their degree plan and then registered for their classes. At the end of the day students were also able to leave the orientation with their UTRGV Student ID. We are so excited to be able to do this for our students! #V’sUp!

Our alumni visit will be coming from Mr. Daniel Roque, Class of 2019, who is an automotive technician and has worked with companies such as Lexus, Cadillac and Chevrolet. On November 16th some of our GEAR UP students had an opportunity to attend this year’s Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Rally sponsored by GEAR UP and the WISD Student Support Services Department. Through this rally, students were able to learn more about skills towards improving their social awareness, emotional regulation, and self-efficacy. Aside from learning about SEL skills, all students attending the event were provided with a calming bracelet and a SayItWith-Music presentation.

GEAR UP: College Now-Career Connected! is excited to bring you the family literacy event, Nuestra Historia Sigue…, to be held on November 9, 2023 at the Mission Event Center at 200 N. Shary Rd., Mission, TX. It will be a memorable experience! Students and parents will learn the importance of developing literacy at home through special topics and literacy strategies to promote a supportive environment, partake in a book distribution, and meet and greet world-renowned and local authors to encourage literacy.

A writing seminar is coming up on October 31st. It will be GEARED towards students pending a college entrance essay or students having a hard time writing their essays. This will be a 3 day session and you must be able to attend all three sessions.

This Tuesday, some of our GEAR UP students had the opportunity to attend the GEAR UP & GO Workforce Readiness Institute. Through this institute, our students got to develop their employability skills such as resume writing, interview skills, teamwork, problem solving, and dressing for success. Awesome job Wildcats!
Students and parents had an opportunity to meet and greet local authors and explore literacy strategies to promote a supportive reading environment at home. Our GEAR UP students enjoyed receiving free books ️and listening to testimonials about the importance of reading.

This Summer three of our GEAR UP girls were selected to participate in the DHR Junior Clinical Research Internship taking place in Edinburg, Texas. The purpose of this internship was to expose and engage students in the discipline of translational and clinical research as well as medicine and allied health sciences. Our girls had an amazing time and we wish the best in their upcoming graduation from the program on August 5th, 2023. Congratulations Judith Gomez, Ashley Solis and Trista Valdez!

We are hosting our GEAR UP Summer Camp to help Juniors prepare for the Math TSIA or RLA TSIA test. This is a great opportunity to receive additional instruction and strategies to pass the college entrance exam! Spots are limited, so sign up as soon as possible.

On Wednesday, May 17th, some of our GEAR UP students got to participate in Region One’s Transition Fair. Our students were able to meet with employers, universities, and over 40 vendors/booths to explore their opportunities for post-secondary success! It was an amazing opportunity for our Wildcats to discover their unique potential to create a bright future after high school!
Our EAST boys had the opportunity to participate in the T.I.E.S. (Together In Education for Success) Masters experience in which they met industry members from all over the RGV. These industry members mentored our students as they played golf and discussed knowledge and skills needed to pursue a career in their respective fields. Our students gained valuable information about financial literacy/financial aid and the use of soft skills. A B I G thanks to Coach Riojas for assisting our students at the event!

This week our GEAR UP students had the opportunity to participate in the BIGGEST Manufacturing Expo in Texas! It was a pleasure to visit with UTRGV. Our students got to meet with professors, scientists and university engineers while experiencing the cutting-edge field of advanced manufacturing!

This initiative will allow bringing back East Alumni through monthly sessions to share their career success and how they got to where they are now. College & Career Kick Off Night
