STEAMsational

STEAM Education is an approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. Students will create connections between literary pieces of work and hands-on projects.

STEAM exposes students to the creative process, offers meaningful connections, increases critical thinking, and offers a unique way to problem solve.

Team Building STEM activity: Paper Chain

QUEST students had 10 minutes to plan as a team. Then 30 minutes to construct their paper chain using only one sheet of construction paper and twelve inches of tape. At the end of the 30 minute time limit their chain was measured. The team with the longest paper chain was declared the winner.

Most Marshmallows Read aloud & Tower

Students listened to the read loud of Most Marshmallows and discussed what makes them unique. Then students completed a STEM challenge of building the tallest marshmallow tower.

Once Upon a STEM...

Fairytales can be integrated into STEM lessons to foster creative play, problem solving and enhance literacy skills.

Goldilocks and the Three bears

Students read Golidlocks and the Three Bears. We discussed the story elements and started the STEM challenge.

Stem Challenge: The Three Bears want to share with

Goldilocks. Build a seat that will hold

all the bears and Goldilocks so they can sit next to

each other and eat their porridge together.

Fairytale STEM

Three billy goats gruff

We read Three Billy Goats Gruff anda discussed the story elements. Then completed the Lego Stem Challenge.

Challenge: The Three Billy Goats Gruff need to get past the troll and over to the other side of the river. Build a bridge for the goats to cross over and high enough the troll to fit under.

the three little pigs

We read The Three Little Pigs and discussed character traits. We talked about inside and outside traits. Students had determine their own inside and outside traits of themselves and of the characters from the story.

Challenge: Design a house using only 12 toothpicks and playdough. The pig must fit in your little house. After building the house, The Big Bad Wolf Blow Dryer will try and blow your house down.

Learning Objective: Students will identify the elements of the fairy tale called, "Jack and the Beanstalk." They will use their knowledge to create a crown with story elements.
