This website is a work in progress. We will be adding more videos as the students progress in the learning. We wanted to get this out as soon as possible so your patience is appreciated.
RDW- This strategy helps students organize their thoughts, visualize problems, and communicate their reasoning. It encourages a deeper understanding of math concepts rather than just finding an answer.
The K–5 Math materials support students as they problem solve by using a simple, repeatable process introduced by the teacher. The Read–Draw–Write (RDW) process calls for students to
1. Read the problem.
2. Draw and label.
3. Write a number sentence (equation).
4. Write a word sentence (statement).
Families may support the process by encouraging their student to ask themselves questions such as
⬛ What do I see?
⬛ Can I draw something?
⬛ What conclusions can I make from my drawing?
The more students participate in reasoning through problems with this systematic-approach, the more
they internalize these practices and thought processes.
These tips are designed to help families support their children’s math learning at home. They accompany each module of the curriculum and provide guidance on the key concepts children are working on, along with suggested activities families can try at home.
Why it matters:
It gives families clear, concrete strategies to engage in their child’s learning rather than just “help with homework”.
It aligns home support with classroom work, making the learning more consistent.
It empowers families to monitor progress and be part of the process (not just after the fact).
Each Bluebonnet Math module introduces specific math terminology—important words and phrases students use to understand and explain their math thinking. These terms help students connect ideas, communicate clearly, and build a strong foundation for future math concepts. Learning and using the correct terminology allows students to discuss strategies, explain their reasoning, and make sense of new topics as they progress through each module. Families can support their child by reviewing these terms together and using them in everyday conversations about math.
The modules in the Bluebonnet Learning K–5 Math instructional materials are intentionally designed to effectively help teachers in all grade levels to analyze students’ thinking. The Bluebonnet Learning K–5 Math instructional materials activities support students’ developmental needs by identifying potential student misconceptions and providing guidance to address these misconceptions. This ensures that students can move away from an algorithmic, rule-based version of math—which can often lead them astray as the concepts become more complex—toward a more holistic competence with mathematical reasoning.
Please note: Some lessons may look a little different or have a different lesson number from the ones in the book, but they cover the same skills and concepts as the assigned material.
