Thank you to all of our 8th grade parents who joined us for our GEAR UP Parent Workshop yesterday evening. We are so grateful for your continued support, thoughtful questions, and for sharing your incredible Vision Boards with our GEAR UP family.

Parents and students had the opportunity to create a 2026 Vision Board to display at home as a reminder of the exciting goals and possibilities ahead. This meaningful activity truly set the tone for finishing our middle school year strong. 2026, here we come! 💫✨

UPCOMING PARENT WORKSHOP: 1.21.26

Happy NEW Year! 🎉GEAR UP lessons continue in the classroom, and we got straight to business! This month, my GEAR UP students had the opportunity to work on a mock résumé to help prepare them for their future endeavors. It was a great chance for them to start thinking about how they can continue building their résumés now. So proud of my 8th graders! They did an amazing job putting all of their academic accomplishments on paper! ✨📄✏️💻🖱️

8th Grade GEAR UP teamed up with National Junior Honor Society to provide our students with the best opportunities possible!

Yesterday, our students enjoyed a rewarding field trip that recognized their commitment to community service and academic excellence, while also exploring future career and job possibilities.

During the trip, students learned about the history of small businesses, entrepreneurship, and the automotive mechanics industry, gaining insight into what it takes to own and operate a successful business. From job shadowing to hands-on learning, this experience helped students connect classroom lessons to real-world careers.

To wrap up the day, 8th grade NJHS students enjoyed lunch at Cheddar’s , followed by a visit to Barnes & Noble for some shopping and exploration.

We are proud of our students for their hard work and dedication and excited to continue opening doors to their future. Until our next trip, Go Katz!

Our students spent the day exploring WISD’s CTE Complex, where they got hands-on experiences in:

A big shout-out to B. Garza Middle School for hosting the UTRGV GEAR UP CBCL for WISD!

GEAR UP lessons continue, and this month we focused on building student portfolios! Students explored their dream jobs, researched possible higher education institutions, and learned about salaries and work schedules.

Our 8th graders also participated in a workshop practicing cursive writing and signing their names — all important skills as they prepare for future postsecondary decisions and the transition to high school!

This Tuesday, some of our GEAR UP students had the opportunity to participate in a transformative event designed to inspire them as future leaders. With a focus on leadership, financial literacy, and personal growth, the event provided our students with the tools to build confidence, develop leadership skills, and enhance their financial knowledge—all within an engaging and motivational environment. Our students had a fantastic time! A special thank you to our 7th-grade teacher for recommending our students to be a part of this incredible experience!

***DEADLINE FOR THE 'ALL ABOARD' SAN ANOTNIO GEAR UP TRIP IS

APRIL 4TH @ 4:00 PM ! ***

MAKE SURE TO SUBMIT YOUR TEACHER RECOMMENDATION FORM TO MS. GARZA AND THAT YOUR PARENTS FILLED OUT YOUR IDEAL LOGIC PAPERWORK BY THEN.

REMEMBER Only 40 students will be selected, and the selection process will be based on several factors. Here are some of the requirements:

Parents must attend at least two Parent Workshops/meetings this semester (attendance in every workshop/meeting is documented).
Students must submit a teacher recommendation form (post on our GEAR UP Google Classroom). DUE APRIL 5TH by 4:00 PM.
Students must be passing all classes and provide an up-to-date report card.
Students must have no current referrals or behavior incidents.

This will be a mandatory meeting as we will be filling out important paperwork for our students to attend out-of-town trips, discussing CTE pathways for our students and TSI Testing.

GEAR UP lessons continue! This past week, Ms. Garza, our GEAR UP coordinator, met with some of our 7th graders to explore different career pathways they can begin in high school and discussed key considerations for post-secondary education. Students learned about the requirements for various careers and the potential salaries for those fields. #ChooseYourPath

Yesterday, our GEAR UP students attended the first GEAR UP trip of the year! They had the incredible opportunity to visit UTRGV and participate in this year’s FESTIBA, a Festival celebrating International Books & Arts! It was an unforgettable experience—getting autographed books and immersing themselves in creativity and expression. Our students gained new insights, inspiration, and made valuable connections with fellow artists and writers. 'Careers' Tapple: February Lesson - Career Pathways

Our 7th-grade GEAR UP students went head-to-head in an exciting game of 'Careers' Tapple, navigating through a variety of career paths. Students teamed up, brainstormed, and prepped for this challenging yet enjoyable competition. A huge CONGRATS to our winners, who earned a Croc charm of their choice! 🐊🏆

GEAR UP has officially been launched at B. Garza Middle School ! On Wednesday, Jan. 29th, 2025, B. Garza Middle School hosted their first parent GEAR UP meeting. Parents were introduced to the GEAR UP Program and learned about all the exciting opportunities available.
